Mr. Cowden began his career as assistant attorney general of the state of Missouri in Jefferson City from 1970 to 1971. After this appointment, he worked as an associate with Morrison, Hecker, Curtis, Kuder & Parrish in Kansas City, MO, from 1971 to 1976. He continued his career with Morrison, Hecker, Curtis, Kuder & Parrish as a partner from 1976 to 1989. Mr. Cowden has served as a member of Baker, Sterchi, Cowden & Rice LLC, formerly Baker, Sterchi & Cowden, since 1989.
Prior to embarking on his career, Mr. Cowden obtained a Bachelor of Arts from Missouri State University in 1967. Following this accomplishment, he earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Missouri and was licensed to practice law by the Missouri State Bar in 1970. He was admitted to practice before the United District Court for the Western District of Missouri in 1971, the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit in 1980 and the United States Supreme Court in 1982. Mr. Cowden has also been admitted to practice before the United States District Court for the District of Kansas, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri and the United States Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit.
In addition to his career, Mr. Cowden was commissioned as a lieutenant in the United States Army in 1970. From 1986 to 1988, he held a position on the board of directors of the Great American Basketball League in Johnson City, KS, and in 1990, he co-authored "Missouri Evidence Restated." He has contributed to the Law School Foundation at the University of Missouri School of Law on the board of trustees since 2010. Mr. Cowden has also been involved with the YMCA of Kansas City as chair of the human development board, and the Village Presbyterian Church on the board of trustees.
Mr. Cowden is a member of the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association. He is associated with the American Board of Trial Advocates, the American College of Trial Lawyers, and the International Association of Defense Counsel. Mr. Cowden also belongs to the Law Society of the University of Missouri School of Law, the Trial Attorneys of America and the Litigation Counsel of America.
Mr. Cowden has been named to Missouri and Kansas Super Lawyers since 2005 and to Chambers and Partners USA since 2008. In 2018, he was the recipient of the Icon Award for distinguished leaders in law by Missouri Lawyers' Weekly. He has been selected as Best Lawyer in America for bet-the-company litigation, commercial litigation, product litigation and aerospace litigation by Best Lawyers. He has also been recognized as Honorary Initiate by the the Order of Barristers at the University of Missouri School of Law and as Dean of Trial Bar by the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association. Mr. Cowden has previously been selected for inclusion in the third edition of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders of America and multiple editions of Who's Who in American Law and Who's Who in America.
