After initially earning a Bachelor of Arts in English from Sonoma State University in 1969, he went on to receive a Master of Arts in English and comparative literature with an emphasis on creative writing at the university in 1970. Mr. Seymour is currently president and chief executive officer of Westwind Associates, a position he has held since 1988, and his professional background is extensive. Enthusiastic about education, he worked as an assistant professor at Sonoma State University from 1985 to 2007, and he was an instructor at John F. Kennedy University from 1985 to 2007. Mr. Seymour's career history also extends to Haight Ashbury Free Clinics, where he worked as business manager, executive administrator and director of training and education projects, as well as Mendocino College, where he served as coordinator and administrator.
Demonstrating finely-honed knowledge in the field of substance abuse recovery, Mr. Seymour has been the coordinator of the California Collaborative Center for Substance Abuse Policy Research since 1997 and the treasurer and chairman of the board of directors of the World Drug Abuse Treatment Network since 1988. He also served as a consultant at Haight Ashbury Free Clinics from 1987 to 2007. Due to his unparalleled excellence in his field, Mr. Seymour has been the recipient of grants from the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
Mr. Seymour is prominent for his numerous written works, which include "Compost College," "Physician's Guide to Psychoactive Drugs" and "The New Drugs." Notably, his influential "Drug Free" was conceived after a conversation with a Rolling Stone book editor requesting a book about getting off drugs. "Drug Free" explores the connection between the twelve-step recovery process and other methods. He has also contributed various articles to professionally-relevant publications.
Exhibiting enthusiasm for civic outreach, Mr. Seymour was a member of California Health Profiles for New Health Policy from 1976 to 1980 and chairman for the Marin Drug Abuse Advisory Board from 1979 to 1981. He is also a member of the Alcohol and Drug Counselors Education Project and the San Francisco Delinquency Prevention Commission, among other organizations. Interested in maintaining connections in his field, Mr. Seymour is a member of the International Society of Addiction Journal Editors, for which he was treasurer from 2000 to 2007. He is also involved with the International Platform Association, the Commonwealth Club of California and the board of directors for Sausalito Village. Due to his accomplishments, Mr. Seymour has been honored in various publications, including Who's Who Among Human Service Professionals, Who's Who in America and Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare.
