Prior to this appointment, she held the position of clinical associate professor in the department of ophthalmology and visual science at the University of Michigan from 2009 to 2015, and clinical assistant professor from 1996 to 2009. Dr. Thoms began her career as a physician and owner of her private practice, Consultants in Ophthalmology, Professional Corporation, in Detroit, MI, from 1978 to 1995.
Before embarking on her professional path, Dr. Thoms pursued an education at Kalamazoo College, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1970. She concluded her studies at Wayne State University in 1974, graduating with a Doctor of Medicine. Following ophthalmology residency, Dr. Thoms became a diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology.
Beyond her responsibilities within the field, Dr. Thoms has participated in numerous endeavors outside of her professional circles. She contributed to the international task force on diabetic retinopathy for the American Academy of Ophthalmology from 2001 to 2002. Furthermore, she held the role of medical director for the Center for Specialty Care Clinics at the University of Michigan from 2004 to 2008. A frequent presenter and lecturer in the health care industry, Dr. Thoms found success with her written works as well, having authored many articles for esteemed medical journals. She served on the editorial board of "Comprehensive Ophthalmology Update" from 1998 to 2008.
Dr. Thoms excelled with her philanthropic efforts as well, including her work as a volunteer and consultant in the Program for Vision Impaired Adults for the Salvation Army, volunteer surgery teacher for ORBIS in 2004, volunteer laser teacher for S.E.E. International in 1997 and volunteer at vision screenings. Since 2017, she has been active as a volunteer host for Colleagues International and a volunteer lecturer for Senior Citizens Buildings. From 1991 to 2004, she was active as a mentor to high school girls for Edumentor in Bloomfield Hills, MI. Likewise, for many years, Dr. Thoms was associated with the Greater Detroit Agency for the Blind and Visually Impaired, serving as vice president of the board of trustees from 2008 to 2011.
In addition to her primary vocation, Dr. Thoms remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to her areas of expertise. She has maintained involvement with the Detroit Ophthalmological Club. Dr. Thoms is also a member of the Michigan Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, and The Torch Club.
In light of her exceptional undertakings, Dr. Thoms has accrued several accolades throughout her impressive career. She has been previously recognized as a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. In 1999, she was presented with an Appreciation Award for Service to the Visually Impaired from the Michigan Ophthalmological Society. One of her greatest joys is maintaining contact with the many technicians and students, particularly women, she has mentored, as in the 1970s, there were few if any female mentors. Dr. Thoms was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who of American Women.
