Dr. Hankinson began his career as an instructor of chemical engineering at the Missouri University of Science and Technology (at the time the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy) from 1960 to 1962. Following this appointment, he was active as an instructor of chemical engineering at the Iowa State University of Science and Technology from 1964 to 1967. In 1967, he joined Phillips Petroleum Company in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. He continued his career at Phillips Petroleum Company as a group leader from 1969 to 1970 and as a thermodynamics consultant from 1970 to 1978. Dr. Hankinson progressed to principal of thermodynamics at Phillips Petroleum Company from 1978 to 1980, and from 1980 to 1982, he held the position of principal process engineer.
Dr. Hankinson maintained involvement with Phillips Petroleum Company from 1982 to 1985 as senior staff associate, and from 1985 to 1987, he became the manager of the engineering sciences branch of technology systems development at Phillips Petroleum Company. From 1987 to 1991, he served as branch manager in Phillips 66 Natural Gas Company, a subsidiary of Phillips Petroleum Company. He was further associated with Phillips Petroleum Company as division manager of architecture and new technologies and corporate information technology from 1991 to 1993. After this opportunity, he worked as senior scientist in research and development and corporate engineering for Phillips Petroleum Company from 1993 to 1996. Dr. Hankinson concluded his career as manager of advanced modeling technology in corporate engineering at Phillips Petroleum Company from 1996 until his retirement in 1999.
Prior to embarking on his professional path, Dr. Hankinson received his Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from the Missouri University of Science and Technology in 1960. Following this accomplishment, he earned his Master of Science in chemical engineering from the Missouri University of Science and Technology in 1962. In 1967, he obtained his Doctor of Philosophy from the Iowa State University of Science and Technology. He was awarded an honorary degree in chemical engineering from the Missouri University of Science and Technology in 1982. Dr. Hankinson is registered professional engineer in the state of Oklahoma.
In addition to his career, Dr. Hankinson was a commissioned reserve officer in the United States Army in 1960. In 1962, he became an active duty second lieutenant. Following this appointment, he was a first lieutenant in the United States Army Chemical Corps and the United States Army from 1962 to 1964. He received an honorable discharge in 1969 as a captain in the United States Army.
From 1965 to 1975, Dr. Hankinson also held the position of adjunct professor of mathematics at Oklahoma State University. During this time, he was also adjunct professor of mathematics at Oklahoma Wesleyan University from 1967 to 1971. From 1979 to 1983, Dr. Hankinson was the founder and president of Basic Resource Services.
Dr. Hankinson was the vice president and a volunteer at the Oklahoma Overseas Mission Board from 1970 to 1971. He was vice president of the technology careers advisory committee from 1972 to 1973 and president from 1973 to 1974. From 1987 to 1989, he was on the board of directors of the Alcohol and Drug Center Inc., having been the chair of the board of directors from 1984 to 1987. He was active as class instructor and coordinator for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults from 1993 to 2016 at St. John's Catholic Church.
During this time, Dr. Hankinson was also a member of the financial council at St. John Catholic Church from 1998 to 2006 and a member of the parish council from 2002 to 2008. Since 1976, he has been a teacher of religious education, a minister of Eucharist and a lector of the Roman Catholic Church. Additionally, Dr. Hankinson has been a Cub Scout leader with the Boy Scouts of America.
From 1979 to 1982, Dr. Hankinson was the chair of the physical properties committee of the static measurement of COSM at the American Petroleum Institute. He was the vice president of membership with the Oklahoma Society of Professional Engineers from 1988 to 1989 and executive vice president from 1989 to 1990. From 1987 to 1991, he was a grand knight of the council with the Knights of Columbus. He was further associated with the Knights of Columbus from 1991 to 1993 as a faithful navigator of the fourth degree and as the director of the state program from 1993 to 1995.
From 1981 to 1985, Dr. Hankinson was a member of the Elks Lodge and he has been a member of the Hillcrest Country Club since 1985. He was the founder and co-chair of the API electronic flow measurement committee for the Oklahoma Society of Professional Engineers from 1989 to 1991. He is also a member of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, and the Order of the Golden Shillelaghm a University Contribution Society. He is a fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and has been director and past president of the Bartlesville section. Dr. Hankinson was the president of the Downtown Kiwanis Club of Bartlesville, Oklahoma in 2006 as well.
In 1964, Dr. Hankinson was the recipient of the Chemical School Excellence Award from the United States Army. He was named as an American Oil Fellow by the Iowa State University of Science and Technology from 1964 to 1967. In 1970, he was honored as an Outstanding Young Engineer in Oklahoma and, in 1971, he received the Outstanding Alumnus Achievement Award from the Iowa State University of Science and Technology. He was awarded a Citation for Service from the American Petroleum Institute in 1982 and was additionally celebrated as Outstanding Engineering in Oklahoma in 1984.
In 1987, Dr. Hankinson was presented with the Distinguished Community Service Award by Phillips Petroleum Company. He was recipient of an Achievement Award from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers in 1990 and the Hanlon Award, one of the highest awards granted by the oil and gas industry, from the Gas Processors Association in 1996. Dr. Hankinson has previously been selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who in the World.
Dr. Hankinson and Lyla Lee Pollard Hankinson were united in marriage June 4, 1960 at Christ Episcopal Church in St. Joseph, Missouri. Their marriage was blessed by the Roman Catholic Church on June 20, 1975 at St. John Before the Latin Gate Catholic Church, Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Hank and Lyla have five children: Kenneth Craig, Michelle Renee, Michael Steven, Mark Christopher, and Douglas Matthew. They have six grandchildren. Dr. Hankinson thanks his wonderful wife, Lyla, and their children for their support and sacrifices which made his professional career possible.
