Mr. Padgett began his career as an associate with Kirkland & Ellis LLP in Chicago, IL, from 1984 to 1988. After this opportunity, he worked as an associate with Baker & Daniels LLP, now Faegre Baker Daniels LLP, in Indianapolis, IN, from 1988 to 1992. He held the role of partner with Johnson, Lawhead, Buth & Pope P.C. in Indianapolis from 1992 to 2000 and of counsel for Barnes & Thornburg LLP in Indianapolis from 2000 to 2004. Mr. Padgett has served as principal for the Padgett Law Group in Indianapolis since 2004.
Prior to embarking on his career, Mr. Padgett received a Bachelor of Arts, summa cum laude, from DePauw University in Greencastle, IN, in 1981. Following this accomplishment, he earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Northwestern University, in Evanston, IL, in 1984. He was admitted to practice law before the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois in 1994 and the United States District Court for the Northern and Southern Districts of Indiana in 1988. Mr. Padgett was also admitted to practice before the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit in 1988.
In addition to his career, Mr. Padgett contributed to Butler University in Indianapolis as an adjunct professor in legal studies from 1989 to 1990. He was active as president and on the board of directors for the Theatre on the Square, now the District Theatre, in Indianapolis from 1994 to 1995 and a member of the council of the Hope Evangelical Covenant Church from 1992 to 1996. He sat on the board of directors for the Meridian Street Foundation from 1994 to 1996, the Indiana Arts Chorale from 2003 to 2006, and the Oaks Academy from 2006 to 2011. He also held a position on the board of advisors of the Independence Academy from 2008 to 2016 and has been active in his church's food pantry. Mr. Padgett was the author of "Racially-Motivated Violence and Intimidation: Inadequate State Enforcement and Federal Civil Rights Remedies" in the Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology in 1984.
Mr. Padgett is a member of the Indiana State Bar Association, the Indianapolis Bar Association, and the Phi Beta Kappa Society, and was a former member of the Christian Legal Society. He has been rated AV Preeminent by Martindale-Hubbell since 1996 and was named Indiana Super Lawyer from 2011 to 2018. He has also achieved a 10 rating from Avvo and a five star rating from clients.
