He started as an associate with Bivins, Weinbrenner & Regan in New Mexico, as well as the firms of Bovis, Kyle & Burch in Alpharetta, GA, and Kemp Smith Duncan & Hammond in El Paso and Albuquerque. In the mid-1980s, he became a shareholder for 17 years with Butt, Thornton & Baehr in Albuquerque medical malpractice and PI defense), and more recently, he gained experience in law with Lewis and Roca Jontz Dawe LLP (medical malpractice and drug and device defense). Since 2015, he has excelled as a managing attorney with the Law Office of J. Douglas Compton. Throughout his career thus far, he has tried 30 cases to verdict dealing with cases in medical malpractice, personal injury and product liability. The highlight of his career has been the three defense verdicts he's achieved for physicians in medical malpractice cases.
A member of the American Board of Trial Advocates, Mr. Compton holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Virginia and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University. Subsequently, he was admitted to the bars in Georgia and New Mexico and through the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Georgia, the U.S. District Court of New Mexico and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10th and 11th Circuits. In order to remain aware of changes in the field, he maintains affiliation with the Atlanta, Albuquerque, Georgia, New Mexico and American Bar Associations, as well as the New Mexico Defense Lawyers Association. He is a member of professional peer societies including the FDCC (2005) and ABOTA (2011). Utilizing the knowledge he has gained over the years and his practice areas of law, he authored a number of articles, including "Medical Malpractice, Annual Survey Edition" and "DPT Vaccine Manufacturer Liability: Chipping Away at Strict Liability to Save the Product." Looking ahead, Mr. Compton intends to experience continued success with tort defense in private practice and staff counsel work for Geico, as their managing attorney for the State of New Mexico.
