A highly esteemed professor with more than 40 years of experience to his credit, Mr. Pugsley currently serves as a professor emeritus-in-residence at Southwestern Law School. He joined Southwestern Law School as an associate professor in 1978 and was named full professor in 1981 until his retirement in 2016. He also held the post of Paul E. Treusch professor of law from 2000 to 2001. Mr. Pugsley began his career as coordinator of peace education programs for The Christophers in New York City in 1971.
In addition to his primary professional obligations, Mr. Pugsley has utilized his expertise in numerous other roles, including professor and instructor at the Southampton College of Long Island University, now known as Stony Brook Southampton, Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center, University of British Columbia and the New School for Social Research. He has also served as acting deputy director of the Criminal Law Education and Research Center at the New York University School of Law from 1983 to 1986 and chair of the Public Interest Law Committee of Southwestern Law School from 1990 to 2001.
For more than two decades, Mr. Pugsley has provided his professional insight as a legal analyst and commentator for print, radio and television media outlets, including analysis of high-profile trials such as the O.J. Simpson trial and the Menendez brothers trial. He has also contributed a number of articles to professional journals.
Mr. Pugsley is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Bar Association, American Legal Studies Association, American Society for Political and Legal Philosophy, the Institute of Society, Ethics and the Life Sciences, Society of American Law Teachers, International Society for the Reform of Criminal Law and Southwestern Criminal Law Society, among others. Outside of his career, Mr. Pugsley holds membership with several civic groups, including being president of the Friends of UCLA Library and Legacy member of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International. He has previously been a member of such organizations as the Executive Committee of Non-Governmental Organizations Associated with the United Nations, Los Angeles Conservancy Issues Task Force and Southern California Coalition against the Death Penalty.
Mr. Pugsley earned a Bachelor of Arts at Stony Brook University in 1968. He continued his studies at the New York University School of Law, receiving a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1975 and Master of Laws in criminal justice in 1977. Mr. Pugsley was awarded a Robert Marshall fellowship by the Criminal Law Education and Research Center at New York University School of Law from 1976-78.
