A highly accomplished writer and educator with more than 40 years of experience to her credit, Ms. Burroway is currently retired, having most recently served in the Graduate Creative Writing Program at Northwestern University, and before that as Robert O. Lawton distinguished professor at the Florida State University. She joined Florida State University in 1972 as an associate professor of English before being promoted to professor of English in 1976 and McKenzie professor of English in 1986.
Ms. Burroway began her career in 1961 as an English instructor at the Harpur College of Arts and Sciences in affiliation with Binghamton University, followed by five years as a lecturer at the University of Sussex from 1965 to 1970. She was also a visiting lecturer at the University of Iowa in 1980 and a Carolyn Benton Cockefair Distinguished Writer-in-Residence at the University of Missouri in 1995.
Ms. Burroway graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts from Barnard College and then earned a Bachelor of Arts, with honors, from the University of Cambridge. She continued her studies by enrolling in the Yale School of Drama before receiving a Master of Arts from the University of Cambridge.
A prolific writer, Ms. Burroway has written eight novels, including "The Buzzards," "Opening Nights," "Raw Silk" and "Cutting Stone." She has also authored numerous essays, plays, poems, children's books and articles to professional journals. Her textbook "Writing Fiction: A Guide to Narrative Craft" is the most widely-used creative writing text in America. Her play "Parts of Speech" won the Brink! Award at Milwaukee's Renaissance Theaterworks, and "Boomerang" was commissioned by Sideshow Theatre Company in 2015. Ms. Burroway has also served as a fiction reviewer for such publications as New Statesman magazine, the Philadelphia Inquirer and The New York Times Book Review, and was on the board of directors of the Association of Writers and Writing Programs from 1987 to 1990, having also served as vice president from 1988 to 1989.
A Lila Wallace Reader's Digest fellow, Ms. Burroway was also the recipient of a Marshall scholarship, a Yaddo residency and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Florida Humanities Council, among many other honors. In light of her exceptional achievements, Ms. Burroway was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who of American Women.
