Dr. Gurland is a physician who specializes in ophthalmology with a subspecialty of pediatric ophthalmology and motility disorders as well as pediatric low vision. She studied under the guidance of Dr. Richard Troutman, a pioneer in the development of modern microsurgery for ophthalmology, during her residency training at State University of New York (SUNY). Not only is Dr. Gurland an experienced pediatric ophthalmologist, she is the assistant chair of the Department of Ophthalmology of the Bronx Lebanon Hospital Center/BronxCare Health System and is an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. She is an emerita attending physician at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai. She is a retired associate professor of ophthalmology and of pediatrics at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. In her years in academic medicine she has participated in the training of at least 200 ophthalmologists, including more than a dozen who have gone on to specialize in pediatric ophthalmology.
Born and raised in New York, Dr. Gurland began her career in the 1970s and has been active in academic medicine since 1990. Prior to that she spent many years in private practice in New York City and was affiliated as well with the New York Association for the Blind, during which time she re-opened a low vision service for children at the organization. She also began a full-service low vision program in the late 1970s at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary with Eleanor Faye, MD, the former Medical Director for Lighthouse who is widely regarded as a major leader in Low Vision care and who trained Dr. Gurland in the delivery of these services.
Graduating with a BA from Barnard College of Columbia University and a MD from SUNY Downstate Medical Center, Dr. Gurland then completed her ophthalmology residency, followed by a neuro-ophthalmology fellowship with Dr. Arthur Wolintz and pediatric ophthalmology training with Dr. Phillip Knapp and Dr. Robert Ellsworth at the Edward S. Harkness Eye Institute at Columbia University Medical Center. She learned phacoemulsification and IOL implantation techniques from Dr. Charles Kelman, the primary developer of this procedure.
Dr. Gurland has authored several book chapters, as well as articles in peer-reviewed articles. An elected fellow of the American College of Surgeons, fellow, former committee member, and Service Award recipient from the American Academy of Ophthalmologists, she is also a longtime member of the American Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus. Dr. Gurland received several teaching awards, including a Distinguished Alumni Award from SUNY.
She served on the community advisory board for the Hebrew Home for the Aged in the Bronx in the 1990s and is currently a board member of the Bronx Opera Company, which has been in existence for the past 50 years. She is a proud mother and grandmother. She has been highlighted in Who's Who of American Women, Who's Who in America, and Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare.
