Prior to his retirement, he was a mathematics professor with the school from 1980 to 2016, having been an associate professor from 1963 to 1980 and an assistant professor from 1962 to 1963. Earlier in his career, Dr. Chalkley was an assistant professor of mathematics at Knox College from 1960 to 1962 and a mathematician with Oak Ridge National Laboratory from 1958 to 1959.
Dr. Chalkley began his career as a student at the University of Cincinnati and obtained a Bachelor Science in chemical engineering in 1954. He continued his studies there and earned a Master of Arts in mathematics in 1956 and a Doctor of Philosophy in mathematics in 1958.
A respected voice in his field, Dr. Chalkley has been affiliated with a number of professional organizations. He is a lifetime member of the Mathematical Association of America, the American Mathematics Society and Sigma Xi. Of particular interest, he has written four research monographs titled "Basic Global Relative Invariants for Homogenous Linear Differential Equations," "Basic Global Relative Invariants for Nonlinear Differential Equations," "Relative Invariants from 1879 Onward: Their Evolution for Differential Equations" and "The Research about Invariants of Ordinary Differential Equations." They complete a historically significant area of mathematics that has interested numerous persons.
Throughout his career, Dr. Chalkley has been recognized for his contributions. He has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in the World.
