Mr. Trott has practiced law for almost 45 years at Young, Moore and Henderson, PA, the Raleigh-based law firm in North Carolina. Hired by the full-service law firm as an associate in 1975 and making partner just three years later, Mr. Trott focused his practice on employment and insurance law. Representing hundreds of clients over the years, he has covered a wide range of employment matters such as investigations by administrative agencies, arbitration and mediation, privacy and defamation in the workplace, drug testing and issues relating to discrimination, among other topics. Regarding matters pertaining to his insurance law and regulation practice, Mr. Trott has advised and represented insurance organizations and companies on regulatory matters concerning insurance rates, interpretation of policies, laws and regulation, licensing and insurance coverage issues.
Mr. Trott has written and spoken extensively on employment law at numerous state, national and international seminars during his career. He has served as a member on the North Carolina Law Review. He served as a board member, treasurer and Investment/Finance committee chair and member of ALFA International, a non-profit global legal network headquartered in Chicago that consists of 145 independent law firms. He is also a longstanding member of the American Bar Association, the North Carolina Bar Association and the Wake County Bar Association as well.
Mr. Trott has also been serving as president of the North Carolina Tennis Foundation since 2018 and as member of the board of the Southern Tennis Foundation. In previous years, he served as vice chair and chair of the Wake County Parks and Recreation Commission, vice chair of the school health advisory committee for the Wake County Board of Education, member of the board of visitors of Peace College, and board member and vice president of the Environmental Education Fund. He is also the former president of the Capital Area Soccer League and the North Carolina Tennis Association, both of which named Mr. Trott to their Hall of Fame. The North Carolina Tennis Association also honored him with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005.
Mr. Trott earned a Bachelor of Arts and Doctor of Jurisprudence at the University of North Carolina in 1968 and 1971, respectively. He was a Morehead scholar between 1964 and 1968 and Wettach scholar between 1968 and 1971. He also completed a Master of Laws, with highest honors, at George Washington University in 1975 while serving as a Lieutenant in the Navy JAG Corps in Washington DC for four years. Mr. Trott has been admitted to the North Carolina Bar Association, the Eastern, Middle and Western Districts of the U.S. District Court of North Carolina, the Fourth Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals, the U.S. Court of Military Appeals and the Supreme Court of the United States.
Listed in several professional publications for his work, including the North Carolina Law Review and North Carolina Super Lawyers, Mr. Trott has also been cited in close to 30 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, and Who's Who in the World. He maintains an AV-Peer Review Rating from Martindale-Hubbell.
A tennis player for many years, Mr. Trott was named to the North Caronia Tennis Hall of Fame in 2017. He lettered three times on ACC champion tennis teams, coached freshman and junior varsity tennis teams while in law school, and was a state doubles champion in several age divisions between 1963 and 1998.
