Dr. Slavin began his career at the University of Michigan as an intern in 1956. Following U.S. Army service, he served Saint Louis University as a resident in internal medicine from 1959 to 1961. He has held multiple positions at Saint Louis University including assistant professor of internal medicine and microbiology from 1965 to 1970, associate professor from 1970 to 1973, and professor from 1973 to 2007. He was director of the Division of Allergy and Immunology from 1965 to 2007 and has held the title of professor emeritus at Saint Louis University since 2007.
Before embarking on his professional path, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1952 from the University of Michigan. He continued his academic efforts with a Doctor of Medicine in 1956 from the Saint Louis University School of Medicine. He concluded his studies at Northwestern University in Allergy and Immunology, graduating with a Master of Science degree in 1964. Following these accomplishments, Dr. Slavin became a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Allergy and Immunology, the latter for which he held the post of treasurer.
Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Dr. Slavin has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. From 1957 to 1959, he served in the United States Army Medical Corps, and later served the non-combat specialty branch as a consultant. He contributed to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America as board chairman from 1985 to 1988 and as founder of the Saint Louis chapter in 1989.
Dr. Slavin found success with his written works as well, having served on the editorial board of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology from 1975 to 1981. During his career, he authored more than 400 peer-reviewed articles for esteemed journals. Dr. Slavin also penned chapters for books, and edited four books in his field.
Dr. Slavin has maintained involvement as a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Central Society for Clinical and Translational Research, and the American Association of Immunologists. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, for which he served as president from 1983 to 1984. From 1985 to 1989, Dr. Slavin was a member of the study section for the National Institutes of Health.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Slavin has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career. He was presented with the Distinguished Service Award in 1995 and the Distinguished Clinician Award in 2005 from the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, He received the Fellows Award from the Academy of Science of Saint Louis in 2003, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Saint Louis Business Journal in 2008. He was also honored among the Ageless Remarkable St. Louisans by Saint Andrew's Charitable Foundation in 2015. He received grants from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health from 1974 to 1980 and the National Institutes of Health from 1967 to 1970 and from 1984 to 2000. Dr. Slavin was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the Midwest. In 2005 he became a Master of the American College of Physicians.
