A highly esteemed physician and educator with more than five decades of experience to his credit, Dr. Cohen currently holds the dual roles of director of the Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development and Walter Kempner professor of medicine, both at the Duke University School of Medicine. He joined Duke University as an Associate in medicine in 1971, was named Assistant Professor in 1972, Associate Professor in 1976 and Professor in 1980. Dr. Cohen also held the position of chair of the department of medicine from 2006 to 2010.
Dr. Cohen earned a Bachelor of Science from Brooklyn College in 1961 and a Doctor of Medicine from SUNY Downstate College of Medicine in 1965. He was an intern and internal medicine resident at Duke University School of Medicine from 1965 to 1967 before completing a fellowship in hematology and oncology in 1971.
Simultaneously with his appointments at Duke Dr. Cohen has served at the affiliated Durham Veterans Affairs Medical Center beginning as the chief of hematology-oncology in 1975. One year later, he was named chief of medical service. From 1982 to 2007, Dr. Cohen held the position of associate chief of staff for Geriatrics and Extended Care at the medical center, where he initiated the Geriatrics Research, Education and Clinical Center, which he directed until 2007. In addition to his primary career responsibilities, Dr. Cohen was chair of the observational study monitoring board of the Women's Health Initiative and chair of the board of science counselors of the National Institute on Aging. He also served as a surgeon in the United States Public Health Service from 1967 to 1969 working at the National Institutes of Health as a Staff Associate.
Dr. Cohen is a past president of the American Geriatrics Society, the International Society of Geriatric Oncology, the Gerontological Society of America, and the American Federation for Aging Research where he currently serves on the Board of Directors. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Hematology, the American Association for Cancer Research, the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology and the Association of American Physicians. Dr. Cohen is also a fellow of the American College of Physicians.
Dr. Cohen is the author of "Medical Immunology" and co-author of "The Link between Religion and Health: Psychoneuroimmunology and the Faith Factor", "Taking Care after 50", and "Practical Geriatric Oncology". He was previously the editor of Cancer I and II, Journals of Gerontology: Medical Sciences, and Geriatric Medicine. He has also contributed over 400 articles to professional journals.
Dr. Cohen was awarded the Dennis W. Jahnigen Memorial Award from the American Geriatrics Society in 2005, the Joseph Freeman Award and Donald P. Kent Award from the Gerontological Society of America in 1998 and 2005, respectively, the Paul Calabresi Award from the International Society of Geriatric Oncology in 2009 and the B.J. Kennedy award from the American Society for Clinical Research in 2010. He received an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from SUNY Downstate School of Medicine and a Distinguished Alumnus Award from Duke University School of Medicine in 2011, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from Brooklyn College in 2016. In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Cohen was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in American Education.
