With nearly 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Stanton has been recognized as professor emeritus of Texas A&M University since 1998. Prior to his retirement, he was the Ray C. Fish professor of geology with the school from 1986 to 1998, having been a professor since 1972 and a member of the faculty since 1967. In addition to his primary roles, he served as department head from 1979 to 1983. Earlier in his career, Dr. Stanton was a research geologist with the Shell Development Company from 1959 to 1967.
Dr. Stanton began his career as a student at the California Institute of Technology, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in 1953. He subsequently joined the United State Army, serving from 1953 to 1955. He continued his education at Harvard University, completing a Master of Arts in 1956. Dr. Stanton subsequently returned to the California Institute of Technology, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in 1960.
A respected leader in the field, Dr. Stanton has been affiliated with a number of organizations in his community. A fellow of the Geological Society of America, he is also a member of the International Palaeontological Association, the Paleontology Society, the Paleontological Research Institution, the Society of Economic Paleontologists and Mineralogists, Sigma Xi and Tau Beta. The co-author of "Paleoecology: Principles and Application," Dr. Stanton has been a visiting professor with the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg in Germany and a research associate with the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.
Throughout his career, Dr. Stanton has been recognized for his achievements. He has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in the West.
