Retired for more than 20 years, Dr. Tamimi is an emeritus professor of soil science who taught at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa in Honolulu between 1963 and 1996. Teaching to Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy level students in courses on such topics as tropical soils, soil chemistry and advanced soil fertility, he also conducted a great amount of research during his tenure. Dr. Tamimi has held such esteemed positions as visiting soil scientist at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, senior soil scientist for Washington State University in Pullman and both a senior soil scientist and senior consultant for the United States Agency for International Development. He has also taught soil science and served as the department head at the University of Jordan in Amman between 1978 and 1979. During his academic career, Dr. Tamimi published approximately 120 articles in scientific journals in his area of expertise.
Although Dr. Tamimi's commitment was mainly in education and research, he also devoted time to helping ranchers and farmers in the state of Hawaii, which he found very rewarding. He even had the opportunity to participate in the establishment of a research center in the Jordan valley, which provided fertilizer recommendations to all Hawaiian farmers. A longstanding member of such organizations as the American Society of Agronomy, the American Society for Horticultural Science, the International Union of Soil Science and Sigma Xi, Dr. Tamimi served as the vice president and president of the Hawaii Farm Bureau Federation in Hilo, Hawaii.
Prior to embarking on his career, Dr. Tamimi received a Bachelor of Science in general agriculture from Purdue University. Following this accomplishment, he earned a Master of Science in soil chemistry from New Mexico State University in Las Cruces and a Doctor of Philosophy in soil chemistry from the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. The recipient of several grants by the agricultural coordinator committee in Honolulu between 1990 and 1993, Dr. Tamimi has also been cited in the third edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
