An expert in environmental science, Dr. Senkayi has been employed with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Dallas, TX, for more than 20 years. An important player in the agency's success, his responsibilities include regulating, and enforcing federal regulations on all animal feeding operations. He began his professional career as a research scientist at Texas A&M University in College Station, TX, in 1977, where he remained for the next decade. Following this appointment, he became the senior soil chemist at Ebasco Environmental Services for three years before transferring to Environmental Management, Inc., for six years, both based in Dallas. He then served as senior soil scientist at the Railroad Commission of Texas in Austin, TX, for one year before starting his current position.
Originally from Mgipi, Uganda, Dr. Senkayi had always known from a young age that he would become a scientist. He attended Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in geology and chemistry in 1971 and a Master of Science in soil science two years later. Immediately after graduating, his talents were recognized by Dr. William Flocker, who was in Uganda on sabbatical. Dr. Senkayi immigrated to the United States, where he went on to obtain a Doctor of Philosophy in soil science from the University of California, Davis, on a full scholarship from the Ford Foundation in 1977. He sees soil as a very important part of life because we cannot survive without it, and has worked very hard to achieve his childhood goal, researching on topics such as the chemistry and mineralogy of lignite, mineralogical weathering processes in soils, and problems associated with reclamation of surface-mined lands. His discoveries have been published in numerous journals related to his field such as the Soil Science Society of America Journal, the Soil Science Journal, and the Clays and Clay Minerals Journal, among others.
In conjunction with his professional accomplishments, Dr. Senkayi has been a member of various science organizations that include the Soil Science Society of America, the Clay Mineral Society, the Mineralogical Society of Great Britain, and Sigma Xi. He was awarded an Exceptional Performance Award by PRC Environmental Management, Inc., in 1991, as well as a Federal Recognition Award nine years later. He is listed in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the World.
