Prior to obtaining these roles, he was a professor with Pantheon-Sorbonne University from 1995 to 2003 and a lecturer with the University of Cambridge from 1985 to 1995. Earlier in his career, Dr. van der Leeuw was a lecturer at the University of Amsterdam from 1976 to 1985 and a researcher with the Netherlands Organizations for Pure Research from 1972 to 1976.
Dr. van der Leeuw began his career as a student at the University of Amsterdam, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in 1976. A respected voice in the field, he has held a number of leadership positions with academic organizations, including chair of archaeology for the Institut Universitaire de France. He is a foreign member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences and was a member of the Conseil Scientifique of the Fyssen Foundation.
The former deputy director of the French National Institute of Sciences of the Universe, Dr. van der Leeuw was secretary general of the French Council for Coordination of Humanities and Social Sciences and he is an external professor for the Santa Fe Institute. He is the director emeritus of the Julie Ann Wrigley Global Institute for Sustainability at Arizona State University, where also is a distinguished sustainability scientist and director of the ASU-SFI Center for Biosocial Complex Systems.
Throughout his career, Dr. van der Leeuw has been recognized for his contributions. He has been recognized as a distinguished research fellow of the French Ministry of Education, a fellow of Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, and a Fulbright postdoctoral fellow by the United States government. An honorary professor and invited scholar of several international universities, he has also been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who in the World.
