Mr. Hayden began his career as an associate with Haight, Gardner, Poor & Havens, now Holland & Knight, in New York City from 1963 to 1970. After this opportunity, he served as assistant general counsel for the Commonwealth Oil Company in New York City from 1970 to 1971. From 1971 to 2018, he was a partner with Hill Rivkins LLP in New York City. During this time, Mr. Hayden was also managing partner with Hill Rivkins LLP from 1991 to 2005.
In addition to his career, Mr. Hayden achieved the rank of lieutenant junior grade while serving in the United States Naval Reserve from 1960 to 1970. He is a regular contributor of articles to the Law Reviews of the Pacific International Maritime Law Association, the Tulane University Law School and the American Institute of Marine Underwriters. He was active as a member of the college council for the State University of New York Maritime College from 1977 to 1998 and has also served as its chairman from 1984 to 1998. He was a member of the advisory council of the Tulane University Law School Admiralty Law Institute from 1983 to 1998. Mr. Hayden was also a trustee of the Seamen's Church Institute of New York from 2004 to 2012.
Prior to embarking on his career, Mr. Hayden obtained a Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation from the State University of New York Maritime College in 1960. Following this accomplishment, he earned a Bachelor of Laws from Syracuse University in New York in 1963. He was admitted to practice law in the state of New York and before the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in 1963. Mr. Hayden was also admitted before the United States District Court for Eastern and Southern Districts of New York in 1964 and the United States Supreme Court in 1967.
Mr. Hayden is a member of Comite Maritime International, the Average Adjusters Association of the United States, where he served as chairman from 2008 to 2009, and the American Bureau of Shipping, where he sat on the advisory committee. He also belongs to the Maritime Law Association of the United States and held the position of chair of the admissions committee from 1974 to 1981, member of the executive committee from 1988 to 1991, secretary from 1996 to 1998, second vice president from 1998 to 2000, first vice president from 2000 to 2002, and president from 2002 to 2004. Additionally, Mr. Hayden is a former member of the American Bar Association, where he was active as chair of the standing committee of admiralty and maritime law from 1982 to 1986, and the India House Club, where he contributed on the board of directors from 2002 to 2012 and as vice president from 2005 to 2012.
Mr. Hayden was the recipient of the Meritorious Public Service Award from the Department of Homeland Security in 2004.
