A highly esteemed and accomplished educator with more than 40 years of experience to his credit, Dr. Vestal is currently retired, having most recently worked as professor of political science at Oklahoma State University, a position he held from 1988 to 2008. Prior to this appointment, he served as dean of continuing studies at Austin College from 1973 to 1978, president of the California Institute of Integral Studies from 1979 to 1983, and senior visiting fellow at the University of Tulsa from 1983 to 1987.
Prior to embarking on his prestigious career, Dr. Vestal earned a Bachelor of Arts in government from the University of North Texas and attended Yale Law School on a scholarship. He continued his studies at Stanford University, receiving both a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in political science.
Dr. Vestal began his career as an associate director of the newly formed United States Peace Corps in 1964. Following this appointment, Dr. Vestal served as assistant to the assistant secretary for education in the United States Department of Health, Education and Welfare from 1966 to 1967, associate dean at Briarcliff College from 1967 to 1969, resident director of the Educational Resources Center of the University of the State of New York in New Delhi from 1969 to 1971, and director of Oklahoma State University-Kyoto in 1995. Dr. Vestal also served as an officer in the United States Army Reserve from 1959 to 1966.
Focusing on world politics and constitutional law, Dr. Vestal has a particular dedication to the study of Ethiopia, where he was stationed while serving the Peace Corps. He has written about the African nation in books such as "Ethiopia: A Post-Cold War African State" and "The Lion of Judah in the New World: Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia and the Shaping of Americans Attitudes toward Africa." He is also the co-author of "Haile Selassie's Ethiopia Revisited" and previously served as senior editor of the International Journal of Ethiopian Studies. Dr. Vestal held the Hiob Ludolf endowed professorship in Ethiopian Studies at the Institute for Asian and African Studies at the University of Hamburg. He has been on the Ethiopian Research Council since 2003 and has been a consultant, contributor, and editor for numerous symposiums and forums regarding Ethiopia.
Dr. Vestal's work has garnered him numerous awards and honors. He was named Alumnus of the Year by the University of North Texas in 2006 and Outstanding Political Scientist by the Oklahoma Political Science Association in 2002. He was also the recipient of the Lifetime Commitment Award from the Global Civic Movement for Change in Ethiopia in 2012. Most recently, Dr. Vestal was awarded the Knight Grand Cross of the Imperial Order of the Star of Honor of Ethiopia by the Crown Council of Ethiopia in 2018. In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Vestal was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in American Education.
