For more than 40 years, Dr. Olmsted has excelled in the field of education. Since 1993, she has worked at Excelsior College, first for 21 years in its Center for Educational Measurement and since 2014 as program director for General Liberal Arts and Judaic Studies and academic director of the study abroad program. She also gives back to her community as a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts and as a member of numerous committees on the Friends Committee on National Legislation.
At the start of her career, Dr. Olmsted joined Chatfield College as an adjunct faculty member in sociology. Over the years, she has taught writing, physical education, speech, drama, English and humanities at institutions such as Wilmington College, Southern State Community College, William Penn University, The Emma Willard School and the Sage College of Albany. In addition, she served as a substitute teacher for 10 school districts in southern Iowa. Although she originally wanted to work as an elementary school teacher, she found herself in love with teaching at the collegiate level and has never looked back.
An expert in her field, Dr. Olmsted holds a Bachelor of Arts in literature and language, as well as history and government, from Wilmington College, and a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in comparative literature from the University of Wisconsin. In order to remain aware of changes in the field, she maintains affiliation with the Modern Language Association, the National Council of Teachers of English, the Society for Technical Communication, the Friends Association in Higher Education, the Association for Jewish Studies and the Country Dance & Song Society.
Throughout her career, Dr. Olmsted has contributed her knowledge to such works as "Mohandas K. Gandhi: The Last Eighteen Years, A Nonviolence and Social Change Sourcebook" and the plays "Crown Light Editions: Ordo Prophetarum" and "Iconia Sancti Nicolai" as well as journal articles and conference presentations. For her excellence in the field, she received two fellowships through the National Endowment for the Humanities and has been featured in professional publications such as Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the Media and Communication, and Who's Who of American Women. In the coming years, Dr. Olmsted intends to continue giving back to her community and experiencing growth and success in her field.
