A retired professor of English and education, Dr. Roulston taught at Murray State University from 1960 until his retirement in 1992. Leading a wonderful career in academia, he was a teacher, mentor and colleague who was highly influential in his field. Prior to his tenure at Murray State University, Dr. Roulston worked as an instructor at the University of Maryland in College Park between 1962 and 1964 and the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks between 1957 and 1960.
In addition to his teachings, Dr. Roulston found success as the author of "James Norman Hall" in 1978 and the co-author of "The Winding Road to West Egg" in 1995. In his first book, he expands his study of James Norman Hall to include the non-Polynesian writings and the collaborative efforts with Charles Nordhoff, resulting in many works, most importantly the Bounty Trilogy. His second book, which was co-authored with his wife, Helen Hoglund Roulston, examines ways in which F. Scott Fitzgerald's early writings do or do not anticipate "The Great Gatsby." The book also includes a short epilogue concerned with Fitzgerald's post-"Gatsby" works. In addition to his two books, Dr. Roulston has authored numerous articles on F. Scott Fitzgerald, as well as several other authors.
Dr. Roulston pursued an education at the University of Maryland, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1954. He continued his studies with a Master of Arts at Indiana University in 1957. He concluded his academic efforts at the University of Maryland in 1965, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy. A longtime member of Phi Kappa Phi, Dr. Roulston has notably been cited in the 23rd edition of Who's Who in the South and Southwest. He passed away on August 10, 2018.
