Advising law firm leaders and corporate legal departments on strategy and long-term vision, prospective mergers and effective integration, he also advises on various management issues such as partner compensation systems and client service initiatives.
Formerly practicing law at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, a leading, international, full-service law firm in Los Angeles, for 37 years, Mr. Beard first served as partner in 1971 and managing partner in 1991 before serving as chairman between 1991 and 2001. Experiencing revenue growth from $250 to $550 million during his career at the firm, he also led the firm's corporate department, where he oversaw financial transactions such as public offerings, private placements, venture capital transactions, mergers, acquisitions and international joint venture and licensing arrangements.
Currently, Mr. Beard is serving on the board of directors for Callaway Golf, and he previously served on the boards of the following companies before they were acquired: Document Sciences, Martin Lawrence Limited Editions and Healthcare USA. He formerly chaired the Denison University board of trustees and the California Minority Council Program's steering committee and is an emeritus board member of the Constitutional Rights Foundation, where he was active between 1994 and 2006. A longstanding member of the California Bar Association, Mr. Beard is also active with the Coto de Caza Golf Club and Chancery Club in his free time. Locally, he has served on the board of directors for the City Club in downtown Los Angeles and the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports from 2005 to 2010.
Mr. Beard has held a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Denison University since 1961 and a Bachelor of Laws from Yale University since 1964. He has been admitted to the California Bar Association, as well as before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. He has notably been cited in every edition of Who's Who in America since 1992, as well as approximately 35 more editions of Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who in the World.
Enjoying sports, especially golf, in his down time, Mr. Beard also loves to travel. Married for 27 years to Karin G. Paridee-Beard, he has three children and six grandchildren.
