Dr. Fry began his career as a professor of political science at the University of Oregon in Eugene from 1981 to 2000. He has held the position of professor of international and intercultural education at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities in Minneapolis since 2000 and currently holds the position of Distinguished International Professor. He also served as director of international studies at the University of Oregon and the director of the Center for Asian and Pacific Studies at various times. He also worked with the Ford Foundation as a program officer and project specialist in their Office for Southeast Asia, Bangkok, Thailand, and was an acting associate professor of education at Stanford University. He has taught at numerous universities in Southeast Asia such as Chulalongkorn, Thammasat, NIDA, Mahidol, Kasetsart, Srinakharinwirot (Thailand), Van Lang (Vietnam), and the National University of Laos. Dr. Fry was active as chair of the board of directors of the Hmong Cultural Center in St. Paul, MN, from 2017 to 2018.
Prior to embarking on his career, Dr. Fry received a Bachelor of Arts from Stanford University in 1964. Following this achievement, he earned a Master of Public Affairs from the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University in 1966. Dr. Fry concluded his education with a Doctor of Philosophy from Stanford University in 1977.
Dr. Fry is the author of the books "Pacific Basin and Oceania" in 1987, "The International Education of the Development Consultant" in 1989, "The International Development Dictionary" in 1991, "Thailand and its Neighbors" in 2006, "The Association of Southeast Asian Nations" in 2008, "Historical Dictionary of Thailand" in 2013, and "Education in Thailand: An Old Elephant in Search of a New Mahout," which is scheduled to come out in October 2018. He is a regular contributor of articles to professional journals, including the article, "The Evolution of Educational Reform in Thailand: The Thai Educational Paradox". Dr. Fry is a fellow of the International Academy for Intercultural Research and a member of the Comparative Education Society, where he sat on the board of directors from 1986 to 1988.
As a testament to his professional success, Dr. Fry was named a Pew Fellow in International Affairs by the Kennedy School at Harvard from 1991 to 1992. He was the recipient of the Distinguished Teaching Award from the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities in 2005 and the Global Engagement Award from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities in 2009. In 2011, he was celebrated with an Honorary Doctorate Award from Thailand. Additionally, Dr. Fry has received global recognition for his work as a public intellectual. Dr. Fry's choice in career was heavily influenced by his time studying abroad and working in Germany and serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in Thailand. The most rewarding experience of his career was his participation with the program International Co-operative Learning, which was a joint venture between the University of Oregon and Japan to take multicultural teams of students to do field work in Southeast Asia.
