Since 2004, Dr. Hingson has found success as the director of the division of epidemiology and prevention research at the National Institute on Alcohol and Alcoholism for the National Institutes of Health, in Bethesda, MD. An internationally recognized researcher and expert in alcohol prevention and epidemiology, he previously excelled as a professor in the department of social and behavioral science at Boston University School of Public Health between 1986 and 2007. While teaching at Boston University, Dr. Hingson worked as the department chairman from 1986 to 2000 and the associate dean for research from 2001 to 2004. As the associate dean he led the development of the research center to prevent alcohol problems among young people from 2001 to 2004.
His research has focused on topics including raising the legal drinking age, the impact of laws that make it illegal for people under age 21 to drive after any drinking; and laws to lower the adult driver legal blood alcohol limit to 0.08 percent; these 3 laws have been adopted by every state in the United States. Dr. Hingson has also done research on the magnitude and prevention of underage drinking and related problems as well as college age drinking and related problems (since the early 1980's underage binge drinking has been cut in half and since 2005 the percentage of college students who engage in binge drinking has declined significantly). He has also done studies on the effects of starting to drink at early ages and the development of alcohol dependence and injuring oneself and others after drinking.
Initially hired by Boston University in 1973 as an assistant professor, Dr. Hingson held the role of an associate professor between 1980 to 1986 prior to becoming a full professor. During the course of his career, he has served as a speaker and discussion leader for hundreds of international and domestic scientific meetings, citizen activist organizations, legislative bodies and annual conferences. A principal and co-investigator on dozens of research projects and training positions between 1979 and 2004, Dr. Hingson completed consultant work for the National Center for Substance Abuse Prevention and the National Institutes of Health.
A past president of the International Council on Alcohol, Drugs and Traffic Safety, Dr. Hingson has also been an advisor to the World Health Organization as well as vice president of public policy for Mothers Against Drunk Driving. Dr. Hingson has been appointed to multiple relevant committees as well, including the committee on alcohol, drugs and traffic safety for the National Transportation Safety Board of the National Academy of Sciences. He serves in the U.S. Government Interagency Coordinating Committee to prevent underage drinking and the Interagency Prevention Working Group of the Office of National Drug Control Policy. The chair of the project combine safety and data monitoring committee for the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, Dr. Hingson is a longtime member of the American Public Health Association, the International Council on Alcohol, Drugs and Traffic Safety and the Research Society on Alcoholism as well.
Dr. Hingson has authored or co-authored approximately 175 scholarly articles for esteemed journals. Likewise, he has contributed chapters to several books and served on the editorial board for six different publications, including the American Journal of Preventive Medicine from 2007 to 2015. Dr. Hingson has dedicated his efforts to the board of Alcohol: Clinical and Experimental Research since 2012.
Honored with a Directors Award from the National Institutes of Health in 2017 for his contributions to the 2016 Surgeon General's Report on Alcohol, Drugs, and Health, Dr. Hingson also accepted the Widmark Award and the Borkenstein Award from the International Council of Alcohol, Drugs and Traffic Safety in 2002 and 2016, a R. Brinkley Smithers Distinguished Scientist Award from the American Society of Addiction Medicine in 2008, and the first Ralph W. Hingson Research in Practice Presidential Annual Award from Mothers Against Drunk Driving in 2003, among others.
He has been featured in more than 45 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare. Dr. Hingson earned a Bachelor of Arts in international relations at Johns Hopkins University, a Master of Public Health in population studies at the University of Pittsburgh and a Doctor of Science in public health and behavioral science at Johns Hopkins University.
