An expert in international trade, marketing, cost benefit and anti-trust economics, Dr. Schmitz has been the Ben Hill Griffin Jr. Eminent Scholar and a professor of food and resource economics at the University of Florida in Gainesville for the past 24 years, as well as an adjunct professor at the University of Saskatchewan and a research professor emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley. He began his teaching career as a professor in the department of agricultural and resource economics at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1968, where he remained for 26 years, and during which time, he also served as the department chair. Also during this time, he served as the Van Vliet Endowed Chair and an Honorary Chair of the Center for the Study of Agriculture, Law, and the Environment at the University of Saskatchewan.
Raised on a farm near Central Butte, Saskatchewan, Canada, Dr. Schmitz earned a Bachelor of Science and Arts from the University of Saskatchewan in 1963, where he earned a Master of Science in agricultural economics the following year. He then received a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy, both in economics, from the University of Wisconsin in 1966 and 1968, respectively. He later returned to the University of Saskatchewan to obtain a Doctor of Letters in 1999. Since graduating, he has received a research fellowship from the Rural Development Research Consortium of the University of California, Berkeley, in 2003. He has also served as the research director of the Turkish Agricultural Economics Research Institute in Ankara, Turkey, and the project director of the Economic Council of Canada. In addition, he has served as a consultant for a large number of establishments in the United States, Canada and Sweden.
For his many offerings to the field of education, Dr. Schmitz has received a plethora of accolades dating back to 1964, when he was awarded a Master's Thesis Award for the Best Thesis in Agricultural Economics in Canada. In the last decade alone, he has also been awarded a Publication of Enduring Quality Award by the Canadian Agricultural Economics Society, an Alumni Achievement Award by the University of Saskatchewan, and the namesake of International Educator of the Year by the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences through the University of Florida. He currently serves on the National Research Council Food Safety Committee of the National Academy of Sciences and is listed in the eighth edition of Who's Who in American Education and four editions of Who's Who in America.
