Previously he was chair and CEO of Bristol Compressors from 1982-1985 and Chair and CEO of NHP,Inc, then the nation's largest owner and manager of rental apartments, from 1985-1997. Prior to beginning his executive career, he was an associate and then partner(1971-1982) of the law firm, Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering in Washington, D.C. He previously had served with USAID, as special assistant to the director for India from 1966-1967 and as Regional Legal Advisor for Afghanistan and Pakistan from 1967-68.
Mr Heller began his career as a student at Princeton University, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in History, summa cum laude, in 1959, and being awarded Danforth Foundation and Woodrow Wilson Fellowships for further study. He received a Master of Arts in history in 1960 from Harvard University, and then his J.D., magna cum laude, from Harvard Law School in 1963. He has been admitted to practice law in the District of Columbia. Mr. Heller is a member of the American Bar Association, the Grolier Club, the Society of the Cincinnati, the Cosmos Club, The Metropolitan Club and The Burning Tree Club.
A respected voice in the field, Mr. Heller has shared his expertise in a variety of capacities. The author of numerous articles, he has also written three books of non-fiction, "The Confederacy is on Her Way up the Spout, Letters to South Carolina, 1861-1864", "An Upcountry Chronicle" and his most recent work, "Democracy's Lawyer: Felix Grundy of the Old Southwest", published by LSU Press in 2010. He has served as an Adjunct Professor of Law at George Washington University, Vice-Chairman of the National Trust for Historical Preservation, and as Chairman of the National Capital Revitalization Corporation, WETA, and the Civil War Trust. He has also served on numerous other for- profit and non-profit boards, and now serves on the board of directors for the Andrew Jackson Foundation, Cumberland University and Equal Chance for Education".
Throughout his career, Mr. Heller has been recognized for his contributions, having won a Meritorious Honor Award from the United States Department of State. The recipient of the Tennessee Book Prize, he was also named NHC Man of the Year. Mr. Heller has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who in the World.
