With nearly 45 years of professional experience to his credit, Prof. Zygmunt was the founder and clinical director of "The Birmingham NeuroSpine Clinic" United Kingdom since 2009, he has also been a Consultant Neurosurgeon at the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, United Kingdom since 1996, and an associate professor of neurosurgery with Lund University, Sweden since 1995. He has also served as clinical service lead in vascular neurosurgery at the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust from 2009 to 2017, and on the Medical Advisory Board of the Priory Hospital in Birmingham from 2001 to 2003, as a training course organizer of west midlands neurosurgical course at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham from 1996 to 2000, and as a Consultant Neurosurgeon for the University Hospital of Northern Sweden, Umeå from 1990 to 1996.
Prior to these appointments, Prof. Zygmunt held the positions of senior registrar in neurosurgery with the department of neurosurgery at Skåne University Hospital, Lund, Sweden from 1986 to 1990, registrar in neurosurgery at the Wessex Neurological Centre for University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, United Kingdom from 1985 to 1986, registrar in neurosurgery for the department of neurosurgery at Skåne University Hospital from 1982 to 1985, and registrar in orthopedics for the department of orthopedics at Skåne University Hospital from 1979 to 1981. From 1977 to 1979, he excelled as a senior house officer in clinical training programs at Trelleborg Hospital and Saint Lars Psychiatric Hospital, Sweden. Prof. Zygmunt began his career by completing national military service with the Swedish Armed Forces between 1974 and 1977.
Before embarking on his professional career, Prof. Zygmunt had pursued his basic medical education at the Medical Academy, Łodz, Poland and at the Medical School of Linköping University, Sweden, becoming a Doctor of Medicine in 1977. Following this accomplishment, he was licensed to practice medicine by the National Board of Health and Welfare for the Kingdom of Sweden in 1979. Prof. Zygmunt concluded his higher medical studies at Lund University in 1992, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy Ph.D. in neurosurgery.
Prof. Zygmunt was later recognized by the National Board of Health and Welfare for the Kingdom of Sweden with a specialist authorization in neurosurgery in 1986 and a specialist authorization in orthopedics in 1990. In 1995, he obtained full medical registration from the General Medical Council in the United Kingdom. Most recently, Prof. Zygmunt was registered as a specialist in neurosurgery by the General Medical Council of the United Kingdom in 2003.
Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Prof. Zygmunt has participated in numerous other endeavors. Since 1996, he has been an honorary senior lecturer at the University of Birmingham. He has found much success with his written works as well, having contributed many articles for such esteemed professional publications as The Journal of Neurosurgery, Acta Neurochirurgica,, the Journal of Orthopedics & Rheumatology, the American Journal of Neuroradiology, the Scandanavian Journal of Rheumatology, Läkartidningen and the British Journal of Neurosurgery, among many others. Furthermore, Prof. Zygmunt has been a member of editorial boards and editor to several medical journals. Through his research Prof. Zygmunt has contributed to science in many ways, in particular he was first to show that certain, high risk spinal procedures could be avoided by alternative simpler and significantly safer procedures. Prof. Zygmunt was also able to describe a highly effective treatment program to certain types of cerebro-vascular strokes.
Prof. Zygmunt remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He has maintained involvement as a surgeon with the British Neurovascular Group. He has also been active with the British Association of Spinal Surgeons, the British Medical Association, the Society of British Neurological Surgeons and the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies. Likewise, he has been a member of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies, the Scandinavian Neurosurgical Society, the Swedish Neurosurgical Society, the Swedish Society of Medicine and the Swedish Medical Association. In light of his exceptional undertakings, Prof. Zygmunt has been selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare and Who's Who in the World.
