Ms. Wells has worked as a news illustrator for NBC-TV in Washington since 1974. She began her professional art career as an illustrator for local and national publications from 1944 to 1959. During this time, Ms. Wells was also an instructor of basic drawing at her alma mater, the Maryland Institute College of Art, in Baltimore from 1946 to 1948.
Ms. Wells then became president of the Maryland chapter of the Artists Equity Association from 1966 to 1968 before starting her own private art practice in Baltimore from 1970 to 1974. She has also been a lecturer in her field, worked to get one percent for the passing of an art bill in Batto, MD, and served several terms on the Virginia Beach Resort Area Advisory Committee. Prior to these accomplishments, Ms. Wells earned a Diploma from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore in 1948, and completed postgraduate work between 1948 and 1949.
Throughout her impressive career, Ms. Wells has displayed her artwork in a number of key exhibitions around the world. She exhibited her work as a part of group shows at Syracuse University in Syracuse, NY in 1976, the Huntsville Museum of Art in Alabama from 1976 to 1978, and the Supreme Court of the United States in Washington in 1978. In 1987, she also exhibited in one-woman shows at the Virginia Beach Art Center, the Supreme Court of the United States, and Arizona State University. She has also been represented in the permanent collections of a large number of important landmarks including the White House, the Supreme Court of the United States, the Maryland Institute College of Art, the Peale Museum, the New Zealand National Gallery of Art, the Toronto Public Library, Colorado State University, the Holtzman Art Gallery, and Towson University, and by Arthur A. Houghton Jr., among others. In addition, Ms. Wells has authored one book, "Illustrating Justice for NBC News," published in 2014.
Ms. Wells has been a member of both the Virginia Beach Art Center and the Artists Gallery in Virginia Beach, VA. As a child, her parents had artistic hobbies and were very supportive of her passion for art. Her aunt, Nelly, was a fine watercolor artist and taught high school art classes. She is very proud of her one-woman show at the Supreme Court of the United States, an exhibition that was attended by Chief Justice Smirnoff of the Soviet Union. Ms. Wells was also invited by Chief Justice Warren E. Burger to a dinner before they went back to Russia.
Ms. Wells is a two-time recipient of an Emmy Award for her work with NBC in 1978. In 1948, she was awarded the Second Prize from the New York Society of Illustrators. She also won Best in Show from the Easton Academy of Art in 1960, as well as First Prize in Fine Arts and the Henry Walters Award from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Ms. Wells is listed in the 21st edition of Who's Who in the East.
