Dr. van der Jagt began his career as a third grade teacher at the John Calvin School in Smithville, Ontario, Canada, from 1975 to 1976. Following this appointment, he was a special education teacher for first through eighth grade at John Calvin Christian School in Burlington, Ontario, Canada, from 1978 to 1980. From 1980 to 1981, Dr. van der Jagt was a first and second grade teacher at the Timothy Christian School in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
Dr. van der Jagt was further associated with Timothy Christian School as a first grade teacher from 1981 to 1994. From 1997 to 2002, he held the position of assistant professor at the University of West Alabama in Livingston, AL. After this opportunity, he served as an assistant professor at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, LA, from 2002 to 2009. Likewise, Dr. van der Jagt has been an assistant professor at Bloomsburg University since 2009.
Prior to embarking on his career, Dr. van der Jagt received a Bachelor of Arts from Western Maryland College, now known as McDaniel College, in Westminster, MD, in 1975. While he was working as a third grade teacher, he realized that he found great enjoyment in working with special needs children. This led to him going back to school and earning a Master of Education in special education from McDaniel College in 1978. Dr. van der Jagt concluded his education in 1997, earning a Doctor of Philosophy from Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge, LA.
In addition to his career, Dr. van der Jagt is a regular contributor of articles to professional journals. He is a member of the American Council on Rural Special Education, the National Association for the Education of Young Children, the International Literacy Association, the Council for Learning Disabilities, the Mid-South Educational Research Association, the Northeastern Educational Research Association, and the Council for Exceptional Children. Dr. van der Jagt has previously been selected for inclusion in the 58th edition of Who's Who in America and the 7th edition of Who's Who in American Education.
