Susan Standfast, MD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

An accomplished listee, Dr. Standfast celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. With more than 35 years of experience as a physician, researcher and educator, Dr. Standfast retired in 1995 after serving as the director of the disability prevention program and the consultant epidemiologist in the division of family health for the New York Department of Health in Albany, NY, for seven years. During her impressive career with the New York Department of Health, she also served as a physician of public health in Albany, director of the cancer surveillance unit, assistant to the director of the division of epidemiology and director of injury control program division epidemiology, among other roles. She further held the position of instructor for many years in the department of preventive and community medicine and the department of community health at the Albany Medical College between 1965 and 1991. Dr. Standfast previously taught epidemiology and co-directed the master's of public health program in the school of public health for the State University of New York from 1987 to 1997.

In addition to working in the field and as an educator, Dr. Standfast has lectured both locally and abroad. Likewise, she has consulted on preventive medicine and epidemiology at Albany Medical College, on infectious diseases at the VA Medical Center in Albany and on epidemiology at the Bombay Cancer Registry Tata Memorial Hospital in India. Serving on the numerous committees and for several significant organizations throughout her career, Dr. Standfast was a member of the ad-hoc task force on data resource development for the director of epidemiology and biometry research program with the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

Dr. Standfast was also a member of the medical advisory board for both the Hudson-Mohawk chapter of the National Foundation of SIDS and the council on human sexuality with Planned Parenthood. Furthermore, she was dedicated to numerous public health taskforces and committees, as well as on the board of directors for the Eddy Community Care. Volunteering for such organizations as the Colonie Senior Services Center and the Glen Eddy Retirement Community, Dr. Standfast has devoted three years as an instructor for AARP 55 Alive since her retirement.

An elected fellow of the American College of Preventive Medicine and the American College of Epidemiology, Dr. Standfast had maintained involvement with the American Public Health Association. She has been additionally associated with the Physicians for Social Responsibility as well, a non-profit organization and largest physician-led organization in the U.S. that works to protect the public from the threats of nuclear proliferation, climate change and environmental toxins.

Dr. Standfast was the recipient of a Distinguished Alumnae Award by Wells College in 1994, and a Volunteer Service for Health Award by the Senior Volunteer Program in 2002. She has been cited in nearly 20 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who of American Women between 1989 and 2005.

Obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in biology and chemistry from Wells College in 1957, Dr. Standfast proceeded to earn a Doctor of Medicine from Columbia University in 1961. She started a pediatric residency at the University of Washington prior to obtaining an Master of Public Health in epidemiology at the University of California at Berkeley. Completing a senior residency in epidemiology with the New York State Department of Health, Dr. Standfast is a diplomate of the American Board of Preventive Medicine.
