With more than 50 years of professional experience, Mr. Effron was a professor of instrumental conducting at Indiana University from 1998 to 2016, also serving as chair of the department since 2006 and both the artistic director and principal conductor of the Brevard Music Center from 1996 to 2007. Prior to obtaining these roles, he was the music director for a number of institutions, including the Chautauqua Institution School Festival Orchestra from 1990 to 1996, the Heidelberg Germany Castle Festival from 1980 to 1992, the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra from 1987 to 1996, and the Eastman Philharmonic from 1977 to 1998. From 1970 to 1977, he excelled as a conductor with the Curtis Institute of Music, and from 1972 to 1976, he found success as the music director for the Central City Opera. Earlier in his career, Mr. Effron was the assistant conductor of the National Ballet from 1969 to 1970 and a conductor with the New York City Opera from 1964 to 1982.
Mr. Effron began his career as a student at the University of Michigan, obtaining a Bachelor of Music in 1960. He continued his studies with Indiana University, earning a Master of Music in 1962. He also holds an honorary doctorate from North Carolina State University.
A respected leader in his areas of interest, Mr. Effron has been active with a number of organizations. He has been a guest conductor for symphony and opera productions in Europe, Asia, the United States, Mexico, Canada, and South America. Likewise, he was active as conductor for recordings of Schwantner Aftertones, and Schuman's Judith, as well as for vocalists Benita Velenta and Jan de Gaetani. Mr. Effron is an honorary member of Sigma Alpha Iota, Mu Phi Epsilon, and the Conductors Guild.
Throughout his career, Mr. Effron has been honored for his accomplishments, having notably accepted a Grammy Award. He was the recipient of a Best Contemporary Recording Award from Ovation Magazine, and the National Federation of Music Clubs recognized him as Musician of the Year. Mr. Effron has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Entertainment, Who's Who in the Midwest, and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
