With nearly 40 years of professional experience, Mr. Steiner was a co-producer and five-time Tony Award winner, and investor focusing on musicals and stage plays. He was a co-producer of the musicals "Big River," "Into the Woods," "The Secret Garden," "Smokey Joe's Café," "The Producers," "Hairspray," "Jersey Boys," "The Times They Are a-Changin'," "The Wedding Singer" and "Honeymoon in Vegas." He was also active in the production of the stage plays "Topdog/Underdog" and "August: Osage County." In addition to his work in theater, he also invested in Chi-Chi's restaurants, and he was one of the co-owners of the Cincinnati Reds. At the time of his death in 2016, Mr. Steiner was working on a musical adaptation of "Bull Durham."
Mr. Steiner was interested in theater from an early age, having acted in many plays as a child. He pursued an education at the University of Wisconsin, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in economics in 1968. He concluded his studies with the University of Chicago in 1970, earning a Master of Business Administration. He was honored with the University of Chicago Graduate Business School's Distinguished Alumni Entrepreneur Award in 2004. In addition, he was admitted to his high school alma mater Walnut Hills High School's Hall of Fame in 2011.
A respected voice in his community, Mr. Steiner was affiliated with a number of organizations. He was a board member of the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati, and the Cincinnati School for Creative and Performing Arts. He was also well known as a professional poker player, and winning the World Series of Poker, the Super Bowl of Poker, the Superstars of Poker, and the Diamond Jim Brady Tournament.
Throughout his career, Mr. Steiner was recognized for his contributions, including 12 Tony Awards for "The Producers," seven Tony Awards for "Big River," and five Tony Awards for "August: Osage County." In addition, he won cash prizes at the World Series of Poker and the Seven Card Stud Title, and he won trophies at several other tournaments, including Super Bow l of Poker, Superstars of Poker, and the Diamond Jim Brady Tournament.
