Teaching in academia for more than 40 years, she was hired in 1977 as a professor of civil engineering technology at Nashville State Technical Community College, where she remained until her retirement in 2004. During her tenure, she has also taught and headed the department of architectural and civil engineering and construction technologies.
A former consultant civil engineer in Nashville, TN, between 1970 and 1977, Ms. Hughes also worked as a road design engineer with the Tennessee Department of Transportation between 1966 and 1970. She is a longstanding member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, the Tennessee Society of Professional Engineers, the American Society of Engineering Education, the American Water Association and the American Society of Civil Engineering, among others.
Honored to be a part of so many students' education over the years, it has been a pleasure for Ms. Hughes to watch them excel, graduate and go out into the world and become successful in their career endeavors. For her tireless devotion at Nashville State Community College, she was notably named Teacher of the Year. She has also been cited in several editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who of American Women.
Ms. Hughes has held a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in civil engineering from Vanderbilt University since 1966 and 1993, respectively. She is a registered professional engineer in the state of Tennessee.
She is the widow of Jerry D. Hughes, who passed away in December of 2014. They had been married since September of 1966. Ms. Hughes is the proud mother of three daughters and grandmother of 11 grandchildren. She is a longtime member and participant of the Disciples of Christ, a local Christian church within her community.
