Dr. Gettleman has worked as the president of Louisiana Research and Development in New Orleans, LA, since 1987 and was a professor in prosthodontics and biomaterials, now emeritus, of the School of Dentistry at the University of Louisville from 1990 to 2016. He began his career at Saint Louis University's School of Dentistry from 1966 to 1968 as a post-doctoral fellow on an NIDR training grant. He then worked up from an instructor to assistant professor at Harvard University between 1971 and 1976 while simultaneously holding his own private practice in Boston, MA. He then became an associate professor and the department chair of the School of Dentistry at Louisiana State University from 1976 to 1980, and then a senior staff associate at the Gulf South Research Institute from 1980 to 1988, funded by the NIH and received three patents. During this time, he also had another private practice in Metairie, LA, from 1980 to 1989.
Dr. Gettleman earned a Bachelor of Arts from Rutgers College in 1962. He went on to obtain a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from Harvard University in 1966, and then a Master of Science in Dentistry at Saint Louis University in 1968. He was admitted to practice dentistry in Florida, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts and Missouri, and has received a fellowship from the American College of Dentists, the Academy of Dental Materials, as well as two others. He served as a lieutenant commander of the U.S. Public Health Service's Dental Health Center in San Francisco, CA, from 1968 to 1970.

He is also the inventor of Novus® soft denture liner, has been the principal or co-investigator of 16 research grants from the National Institutes of Health, and has contributed 14 chapters to books and 80 articles and 150 abstracts to professional journals. He has been a member of the International Association for Dental Research since 1966, the American Academy of Maxillofacial Prosthetics since 2001 and the student chapter advisor of Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity since 1995, and he has been awarded many accolades for his contributions to his field. He is listed in the 23rd edition of Who's Who in the South and Southwest and the first and fifth editions of Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
