With more than 40 years of professional experience, Ms. Cairns worked as a physical education teacher with the Christina School District from 1964 to 2006, for which she also served as coordinator of adult education from 1998 to 2006. Earlier in her career, she excelled as a physical education teacher and a coach with the Central Columbia County High School from 1961 to 1964. In addition to her primary roles, she was a consultant for the University of Delaware, a cooperative teacher and area coordinator for New Castle County Parks and Recreation, and the chair of the Leasure Elementary School Campaign for the United Fund.
Ms. Cairns began her career as a student at Pennsylvania State University, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in education in 1961. She subsequently joined West Chester University, earning a Master of Science in education in 1965. She has also completed coursework with the University of Delaware and Villanova University. Ms. Cairns is certified as a teacher in Delaware and Pennsylvania, as a principal in Delaware, and as an adaptive physical education specialist.
A respected voice in her areas of expertise, Ms. Cairns has been active with a number of organizations in her community. She is a member of the executive board and former vice president of dance for Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance. She is additionally affiliated with the American Association of University Women, the Delaware State Education Association, and the National Education Association.
Throughout her career, Ms. Cairns has been honored for her achievements. She has accepted an Outstanding Service Award from the parks and recreation department of New Castle County, DE, and a Service Award from New Castle County, DE. She was recognized as the Adaptive Physical Education Teacher of the Year by the state of Delaware. Ms. Cairns has been celebrated in numerous publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who of American Women.
