A highly esteemed engineer and educator with over 40 years of experience to his credit, Dr. Chawla is currently professor emeritus at the University Alabama at Birmingham. He had been a professor at the university since 1998 and chairman of the department of materials and mechanical engineering from 1999 to 2001. Prior to his time at the University Alabama at Birmingham, Dr. Chawla served as a professor at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology in Socorro from 1985 to 1997.
Dr. Chawla earned a Bachelor of Science from Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi in his native India in 1965. He continued his education in the United States of America, receiving both a Master of Science in 1967 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1971 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Chawla began his teaching career at the Military Institute of Engineering in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where from 1971 to 1984, he progressed from associate professor to professor before being named department head in 1978.
In addition to his primary teaching responsibilities, Dr. Chawla has done extensive work as a visiting professor at several leading academic institutions around the world including the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, Laval University in Quebec, Canada, and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, Switzerland. He was also a visiting scientist at the Los Alamos National Laboratory and Germany's Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing in Berlin in 2004, and an Eshbach visiting scholar at Northwestern University in 1992.

In light of his exceptional accomplishments, Dr. Chawla was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and the 27th edition of Who's Who in Finance and Industry.
