He has been on the faculty of the University at Buffalo, State University of New York, since 1968, doing teaching and research in the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and the College of Arts and Sciences. An expert in designing and studying mechanism-based enzyme inhibitors as potential drugs, Dr. Kalman has conducted research in the mechanisms of enzyme and drug action, rational design of anti-cancer and anti-microbial agents, antifolates, nucleoside and nucleotide analogues, in the areas of bio-organic and medicinal chemistry.
Dr. Kalman started his career as a chemical engineer in his home country of Hungary. After arriving to the United States in 1963, he desired to learn more about biochemistry and life sciences, which led him to pursue the PhD degree in biochemical pharmacology under the mentorship of the late Professor Thomas J. Bardos, who was working in the field of cancer research. Dr. Kalman found Dr. Bardos' work to be very exciting and inspiring, and decided to follow his footsteps.
Dr. Kalman served as a visiting professor in the department of pharmacology at Yale University between 1970 and 1975, and at the Medical College of Virginia between 1996 and 1997. He also served on a special review committee for the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIH) in Bethesda, MD, from 1990 to 1992 and lent his expertise as a member of the science advisory committee with the American Cancer Society in Atlanta, GA, from 1990 to 1994. Dr. Kalman is notably a longtime member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Association for Cancer Research, the American Chemical Society, the New York Academy of Sciences, Sigma Xi and Rho Chi. He is also an elected fellow of the American Institute of Chemistry.
In addition to contributing multiple articles to scholarly journals during his lengthy career, Dr. Kalman was editor of "Drug Action and Design: Mechanism Based Enzyme Inhibitors" published in 1979, and co-edited with Dr. Bardos of "New Approaches to the Design of Antineoplastic Agents" (1982).
Dr. Kalman was an NIH pre- and postdoctoral fellow from 1966 to 1969, and a Research Carrier Development Awardee between 1971 and 1976. He was also an American Cancer Society scholar between 1996 and 1997. Dr. Kalman has been showcased in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who in the World.
Dr. Kalman has received a Diploma in Chemical Engineering from the Technical University of Budapest in 1959, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York in 1968.
A very optimistic person who has enjoyed a wonderful career in the sciences and academia, Dr. Kalman is grateful for the many opportunities he has had in his lifetime. He greatly benefited from the exceptionally broad education he has received in Budapest, Hungary that laid a solid foundation for his future professional career. Together with his wonderful wife Marietta, who was born in Holland, he frequently travels to Europe to reconnect with their cultural heritage.
