Her more than 50 years of professional experience have been marked by widespread recognition of her multiple achievements. In addition to a distinguished teaching career, she has done extensive field work in Africa, and worked to improve health and education facilities, especially for girls and young women in Nigeria.
Dr. Herskovits, a research professor of African history at Purchase College since 1999, was introduced to African studies at an early age: Her father, Melville J. Herskovits, was a pioneer in the field of African anthropology; her mother, Frances, joined him in his work.
Dr. Herskovits obtained a bachelor's degree with high honors in history from Swarthmore College in 1956 and a doctorate in African history from England's Oxford University in 1960. She is a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She was a lecturer in political science at Brown University and in history at Swarthmore in 1961-62. She was an instructor in history at Swarthmore from 1962-65, and she became an assistant professor of history in 1962. She moved to the history department at City College of New York in 1967, where she became associate professor in 1969.
She served as chairman of the history department at the State University of New York at Purchase from 1971 to 1978 and, as associate professor, was the presiding officer of the faculty in 1975-76. As professor of history since 1977, she continued teaching until 1999, when she became research professor.
Dr. Herskovits has been affiliated with a number of organizations in her community. She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. A member of the American Historical Society, she was on the board of directors of the African Studies Association and later, the Near East Foundation. She is a founding trustee of the T.Y. Danjuma Foundation in Nigeria. She has been a consultant to other nonprofit organizations and corporations as well. She has also testified before both Senate and House committees as an expert witness on African issues. She has written extensively, including for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Policy.
She has in addition lectured at the Foreign Service Institute, the National Defense University, and the School of International Affairs, Columbia University, and was adjunct professor at Columbia, where she co-chaired the university's faculty seminar on Africa. Under the auspices of the Carnegie Corporation, the Ford Foundation and the International Peace Academy, she worked with the late Joseph N. Garba, once the president of the United Nations General Assembly, on a study of regional defense issues among southern African nations.
Dr. Herskovits has been recognized for her accomplishments throughout her career. She received a Lucretia Mott Fellowship from Swarthmore College and a Ford Foundation Foreign Area Training Fellowship and subsequent research award. She has been a grantee of the Social Science Research Council/American Council of Learned Societies, the National Endowment for Humanities, and the Research Foundations of the City and State Universities of New York. She has been cited in numerous publications, including Who's Who in the East.
