Ms. Symens began her career as an elementary school teacher at O'Brien County Rural Schools in Primghar, IA, from 1949 to 1954. Following this position, she was an elementary school teacher at the Gaza Community School in Iowa from 1954 to 1960. Ms. Symens concluded her teaching career as a secondary school teacher at Primghar Community School in Iowa from 1960 to 1981.
She was a sales representative for Discovery Toys from 1984 to 1986. From 1981 to 1987, Ms. Symens was owner of the fitness salon, Slim 'N' Trim, in George and Rock Rapids, IA. After this opportunity, she owned the George Cafe from 1985 to 1990 and the Pizza Ranch from 1988 to 1996. She contributed to Espial with the network marketing division from 1997 to 1999. From 2000 to 2003, she served as director for Coastal Vacations, and in 2004, she worked as the director for Delmax Liquidations. Most recently, Ms. Symens was active as the director of Delmax Debt Arbitration from 2004 to 2005.
Prior to embarking on her career, Ms. Symens received a Bachelor of Science, magna cum laude, from Westmar University in Le Mars, IA, in 1970. She also completed more than 30 hours of graduate level coursework in elementary and secondary education social sciences. Ms. Symens was a certified teacher in the state of Iowa.
In addition to her primary career endeavors, Ms. Symens owned the Antique & Gift Shop and was an advertising sales consultant from 1998 to 2000. She was president of the Primghar Education Association from 1970 to 1971. Beginning in 1971, she was a sponsor for children in Mexico through Childfund International. Ms. Symens is currently a sponsor for school tuition for children in Uganda.
Ms. Symens was a member of the George Chamber of Commerce, Delta Kappa Gamma, St. John's Lutheran Church and the Zoar Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of the George Kiwanis Club, serving as their secretary from 1991 to 2005. In recognition of her success, she received the History Award and the Excellence in Education Award. Additionally, she was honored as the valedictorian of her local high school. Ms. Symens has previously been selected for inclusion in the 37th edition of Who's Who in Finance and Business, the 25th edition of Who's Who in the Midwest and multiple issues of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women.
