Mr. Haka worked as the director of libraries at Michigan State University in East Lansing, MI, beginning in 1997, retiring just this year. He began his career as a historical research editor at the Illinois State Historical Library in Springfield, IL, in 1971, getting promoted to field service representative by 1973. He then became assistant curator of the Kansas collection at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, KS, for one year before being moving up to circulation librarian in 1978, a position he kept for four years. Following this appointment, he began working at Michigan State University, making his way up the ranks from information librarian to head of information reference, head of access services, and assistant director of administration services.
With an everlasting passion for historical research, Mr. Haka earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from Western Illinois University in 1971. After graduating, he enlisted in the Illinois Army National Guard from 1971 to 1976 and then received a Master of Arts in American history from Sangamon State University, now known as the University of Illinois Springfield, where he also received a Master of Arts in library science in 1977. He went on to obtain a Master of Arts in business administration from the University of Kansas in 1981. In addition to his full-time roles, he has served as a consultant for various colleges, including Florida Atlantic University, Loyola University in Chicago, the University of Glasgow, and the University of New Haven. He also served as vice president and chair of the board of trustees for the Library of Michigan.
In conjunction with his professional roles, Mr. Haka was also appointed as a Golf Digest panelist and received a Special Library Association Fellowship in 1976. He was named Librarian of the Year by the Michigan Library Association in 2008. The biggest highlight of his career has been when his library acquired the ROVI Collection, valued at about $12 million, which is one of the most comprehensive collections of music, videos, and electronic games in the world. He is listed in the third edition of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America, one edition of Who's Who in American Libraries, and several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, and Who's Who in the Midwest.
