Dr. Susan Barron, a clinical psychologist, and practicing psychotherapist with Health Psychology Associates, is a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychological Specialties and a Board Certified Fellow of the American College of Advanced Practice Psychologists.
After completing her internship at Bellevue Psychiatric Hospital, Dr. Barron remained on staff for an additional two years. She then worked first as staff psychologist, then senior psychologist at the Lighthouse, New York Association for the Blind, then as Director of Psychological Services at the Peninsula Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired in California and Director of Psychological Services at Thoms North Carolina Rehabilitation Hospital in Asheville.
During this time Dr. Barron developed expertise in diabetes and blindness specializing in dealing with the emotional consequences of physical illness and disability working as administrator, clinician and consultant in both her private practice and for a wide variety of agencies, hospitals, and health service facilities. As a result, she has served as a Consulting Psychologist to more than 7 state organizations from New York to California.
For over six years, Dr. Barron was The State Coordinator of Psychological Services for the New York State Office of Vocational Rehabilitation where she was responsible for policy, planning and implementation as well as training, supervising and directing over 250 private practice psychologists and 100 vocational rehabilitation counselors throughout the state.
During this time she was also Founder/Director of the Family Support Program of the Intensive Care Units of the New York Infirmary-Beekman Downtown Hospital.
From 1987 to 1994, Dr. Barron was Consulting Clinical Psychologist at New York Hospital Cornell University Medical Center where she served as the Behavioral Scientist for the joint National Institutes of Health 10 year Diabetes Control and Complications Trial at the Cornell site.
Over the years, Dr. Barron has developed, initiated, and directed professional conferences and workshops. She delivered the Keynote address at the National Multiple Disabilities Conference, addressed the National Academy of Sciences, was a member of the Human Services Advisory Board of the Retinitis Pigmentosa Foundation and served on the selection committee of the Doctoral Psychology Internship program at the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine of New York University Medical Center.
Dr. Barron received Bachelors and Masters Degrees from the City College of New York and was in the first PhD graduating class in Clinical Psychology from the City University of New York.
She was Certified in alcohol and related substance abuse through the American Psychological Association College of Professional Psychology, is a life fellow of the American Orthopsychiatric Association, listed in the National Register of Health Service Psychologists, a member of the American College of Forensic Examiners, American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the California State Psychological Association.
Since 2006, Dr. Barron has been facilitating nationwide telesupport groups for the parents of blind children, and in 2010 added a similar group for parents of blind and autistic children for the Children's Vision Health Initiative of the Lighthouse Guild International.
