A notable curator, art historian, exhibit designer, grant writer and educator, Ms. O'Connor retired from Santa Fe College in 2005 as a professor emerita following 11 years of service. Initially hired by Santa Fe College in 1994 as a curator and instructor, she then worked as an associate professor of art history between 1999 and 2005. She previously excelled in the field as a curator for the Thomas Center Gallery in the city of Gainesville, FL, between 1985 and 1994. She also found success as an instructor of art history at the University of Florida between 1969 and 1977 and as a humanities instructor at Nova Southeastern University in 1985.
Teaching, lecturing and writing about art for more than 40 years, Ms. O'Connor has been passionate about every aspect of her career. She has organized and attended numerous conferences, curated and served as a guest curator of numerous exhibitions at Thomas Center Gallery and served as a chief curator of the Santa Fe Gallery at Santa Fe Community College. She was also active as an independent curator and the president of Design Concepts in Gainesville, FL, between 1998 and 2010, where she additionally provided exhibition consultation and design for various clients including the Florida Museum of Natural History, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the Paynes Prairie State Preserve. Furthermore, Ms. O'Connor had maintained involvement on the board of directors for the Institute for Learning in Retirement between 2006 and 2012 and the Southeastern Women's Caucus for Art between 1978 and 1981.
Ms. O'Connor authored "Lost Cities of the Ancient Southeast" through University Press Florida in 1995, which was the recipient of a Design Award in 1996. She later authored "The American River Trilogy" through Archway Publications and "Florida's American Heritage River: Images from the St. John Region" through University Press Florida. She was also a featured writer for Business to Business Magazine between 1981 and 1983, a staff writer for the University of Florida between 1982 and 1983 and a guest editor for FORUM Magazine in 2010.
The current president of O'Connor Art LLC in Gainesville, FL, Ms. O'Connor combines her talent with that of her husband, John O'Connor, to offer a variety of specialized services in the art world. Aiding and organizing design exhibitions, booking speakers and assisting clients in a number of other ways, they also sell original works of arts and limited-edition prints created by Mr. O'Connor. She has served as a member of the planning committee for the Florida Arts Celebration, the board of directors for Dance Alive, the executive committee for the Alachua County Democratic Party and the cultural advisory board for city of Gainesville, FL. A member of the College Arts Association, the Native American Art Studies Association, the Florida Writers Association, the Northern California Publishers and Authors, the Writers Alliance of Gainesville and the Historical Novel Society, Ms. O'Connor has also been active in her local community.
Ms. O'Connor was the recipient of numerous grants from such organizations as the Florida Humanities Council, the Southern Arts Federation, the Florida Arts Council and Ulrich Bay Foundation. She has also accepted several awards for her writings, including a First Prize in Fiction from the Northern California Publishers and Authors and a Silver Medal President's Award for Fiction from Florida Authors. She has notably been highlighted in the 54th edition of Who's Who in America and the 22nd and 25th editions of Who's Who of American Women as well. Ms. O'Connor earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Master of Arts in history and Master of Fine Arts in art history at Ohio University in 1966, 1968 and 1970, respectively.
