With a career spanning over 50 years, Dr. Zielinski currently serves as the president and director of research and development at Omegalink International Ltd. in Campton, NH, a position he has held since 1986. Immediately prior to this posting, he worked as a geophysicist at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, NY, from 1984 to 1986. After beginning his career as a student trainee at the United States Naval Oceanographic Office in Suitland, MD, in 1967, he also contributed to the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University in Palisades, NY, as a research assistant from 1970 to 1977 and to Columbia University in New York City as a teaching assistant in 1972. Dr. Zielinski also spent six years with Gulf Research & Development Company in Pittsburgh, PA, as a research geophysicist and senior research geophysicist also supervising graduate student research.
In addition to his primary career responsibilities, Dr. Zielinski has held such positions as adjunct research scientist with Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, guest scientist at Brookhaven National Laboratory, and member of the advisory panel on New Hampshire's geothermal potential for the New Hampshire Geological Survey. He has also conducted field work across the globe, including in the Norwegian-Greenland Sea, the Barents Sea, the South China Sea, offshore north Borneo, Alaska, Argentina, offshore Angola, Peruvian Amazonia, Nevada, Wyoming, Louisiana bayous, offshore California, Chukchi Sea, Gulf of Mexico, Galveston Bay Texas, and Poland with the Polish Geological Institute. Dr. Zielinski co-authored "Geodynamics of Iceland and the North Atlantic Area" and is a regular contributor to professional journals, such as the Journal of Geophysical Research, Geophysics, the Geological Journal of the Ukrainian Academy of Science, the Geological Journal of the Royal Astronomical Society, and the American Association of Petroleum Geologists Bulletin.
Prior to embarking on his career, Dr. Zielinski received a Bachelor of Arts in physics, cum laude, from the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut in 1970. Following this accomplishment, he earned a Master of Philosophy in geophysics from Columbia University in 1974 and a Doctor of Philosophy in geophysics from Columbia University in 1977. Dr. Zielinski also holds an offshore survival certification from the United States Coast Guard.
Dr. Zielinski is a member of the American Geophysical Union, the American Institute of Physics, the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, the American Alpine Club, and Sigma Pi Sigma. Having achieved much throughout his career, he has most notably established the first heat flow measurement group at a United States oil company, first heat flow measurements made via offshore geotechnical drilling, made significant contribution to understanding the temperature environment of hydrocarbon deposits and fluid flow in the Earth's crust, was the first to show the relationship between heat flow and molecular biomarkers in marine sediments, first thermal model of a passive continental margin's ocean/continent boundary, and proposed new heat flow measurements for Antarctica. Faculty fellow and Vetlesen fellow of Columbia University, he was also a United States Department of Energy grantee for the first in-situ measurements of the metabolic heat from benthic marine microbes, a NATO Advanced Study Institute invitee in 1974, a Northwest Argentina High Altitude Archaeological Expedition invitee in 1982, a United Nations conference invitee in 1990, received a NASA commendation in 2010 and an endorsement from New Hampshire Senator Jeanne Shaheen in 2014. Current emphasis is on groundwater and geothermal energy exploration along with student participation. Dr. Zielinski has previously been selected for inclusion in the third edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering and the 65th edition of Who's Who in America.
