As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Born and raised in Minneapolis, Mr. Rath relocated to New York City in 1977 to pursue his passion for the arts. Within three years, he began participating in both group and solo shows. Mr. Rath's imagery has been greatly inspired by his personal narrative, including dreams, nightmares, and childhood memories. Painting various objects and landscapes that are a symbolic representation of his inner world, he gives great detail to facial features, patterns, architectural elements and other aspects of his designs. He relies on three specific processes when working on a painting: subjective experiences, kinesthetic memory, and his visceral reaction to his subject matter. Inspired by the Post-Impressionist and early Modernist schools, Rath's imagery references a wide range of influences including German Expressionism, Surrealism, and many old master works. Travel to foreign museums shaped Rath's vision and understanding of the power of art and our common humanity. One of Mr. Rath's greatest experiences was during a trip to Salzburg, Austria in 2006. Selected to participate in the group show "New York Contemporary: Art Times Squared" at Hangar-7, he was interviewed about his 911 paintings for Austrian television.

In 1999 Mr. Rath completed two large public art pieces at Public School 7, Brooklyn, NY, commissioned by the NYC Board of Education and the NYS School Construction Authority.
Mr. Rath's paintings are included in many corporate and private collections, including Boston Medical Center and Goodwin, Proctor, and Hoar, Boston, MA; Centre Investment Services in Pembroke, Bermuda; Hale and Dorr, Washington DC; and NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation, Coney Island Hospital, Brooklyn, NY.

Since 2010, Mr. Rath has published four books concerning his art. "For the People: The Paintings and Writings of Ed Rath," 2010, showcases 110 paintings and is a testimony to the enduring power of art and the human spirit. One year later he published "Under the Influence," a catalogue of drawings and paintings from 2009 to 2011. This was followed by "Three Touchstones," 2013, which focuses on three places in the Midwest that have inspired his landscape work. "Dreams and Nightmares," 2014, is a compilation of drawings, paintings and annotations of 52 of his dreams and nightmares. Ed Rath was the subject of the 2015 book "The Other Side," by David Johnson. It explores the transition in Rath's artwork from landscape-based imagery to cartoon-like, animated tree imagery following the untimely death of his wife, Laura.

While attending boarding school as a youth, Mr. Rath discovered he greatly enjoyed drawing, finding it to be very cathartic, and had his first works published in the school newspaper. After graduating from high school, Mr. Rath continued to pursue art, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 1974 and a Master of Fine Arts at the Yale University School of Art, Yale University, New Haven, CT, in 1976. Accepting the opportunity to teach, he became a drawing instructor at Parsons School of Design, NYC, from 1985-1988, later teaching art also at the Robert Fulton School (Public School 8) in Brooklyn, 1991-2000. Additionally, he taught at the Rush Kids, Rush Teens, and Rush Portfolio programs in Brooklyn, NY, through the Rush Philanthropic Foundation, 2006-2018.
