A retired music educator who continues to devote his time as an adjudicator, clinician and arranger, He previously worked as the assistant band director at Lane High School from 1972 to 1974 and as an adjunct saxophone instructor at Madison College from 1974 to 1975. Mr. Tornello excelled as the director of bands at Charlottesville High School between 1974 and 2009. After retiring from teaching at the high school in 2009, Mr. Tornello continues to serve as an adjunct saxophone instructor at the University of Virginia and an adjudicator across the United States.
Exposed to big band music by his parents, his family, especially his wife, Nancy, have been very encouraging and supportive of his interests and successes in the field. While he was a junior high school and high school student, he further completed musical training with several musicians of the big band era in addition to the NBC Symphony. Mr. Tornello had also played and directed the Oceanside volunteer fireman's band while in school.
Accepted to study at the Shenandoah Conservatory, a private conservatory of music in Winchester, Va., Mr. Tornello graduated with a Bachelor of Music Education in 1972. He later received a Master of Education at the University of Virginia in 1976. An arranger whose work has been published by Woodson Publications, Mr. Tornello has also been a longstanding member of the Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Fraternity.
Honored for his work numerous times, Mr. Tornello received the Legion of Honor Award from the Sousa Foundation and the Shenandoah Conservatory Alumnus of Excellence Award. He was additionally inducted into the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association Hall of Fame, the Honor Band Directors Hall of Fame and the Phi Beta Mu Hall of Fame. Moreover, Mr. Tornello was selected for inclusion in the 61st edition of Who's Who in America.
