Murray L. Levin, MD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Murray L. Levin's research has resulted in the publication of more than 70 of his articles in professional journals.

Affiliated with Northwestern University for 52 years, Dr. Levin officially retired from the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University in 2002. Now a professor emeritus of medicine, he taught courses in internal medicine, and nephrology and hypertension. Working in this capacity from 1966 to 2001, he served Northwestern University School of Medicine as an assistant and associate professor on campus from 1966 to 1980 and as professor of medicine until 2001 when he retired and became professor emeritus. Dr. Levin was Chief of the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension at the VA Medical Center from 1970 to 1976, and Chief of Medical Service at the VA Medical Center from 1976 to 1986. He then became Chief of the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and Northwestern Medical Center from 1986 to 1991. He was a teaching Firm Chief in the Department of Medicine from 1991 to 2000.

He was elected a fellow of the American College of Physicians and is a longtime member of the Central Society for Clinical Research, the International Society of Nephrology and the American Society of Nephrology.

Dr. Levin became intrigued by electrolytes and water as an undergraduate while studying chemistry. Maintaining his interest throughout medical school, his interest only became heightened after meeting Dr. Maurice Strauss, one of the country's leading original nephrologists. Since completing his schooling, he has become an expert in the management of electrolyte and water disorders. His research has also resulted in the publication of more than 70 of his articles in professional journals and texts such as the Journal of the American Medical Association, the American Journal of Kidney Disease, and the American Journal of Physiology. Dr. Levin has also served as an author and editor of the "Manual of Nephrology."

Dr. Levin previously served as the Secretary-Treasurer and President of the Midwest Section of the American Federation for Clinical Research and was Secretary-Treasurer and President of the Central Society for Clinical Research. Locally, he is a member and former class representative of the Harvard Alumni Association, a member of the Harvard Club of Chicago, and the past president of his condominium board. Furthermore, Dr. Levin was a tutor of underprivileged children at the Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago.

The recipient of several teaching awards during his tenure, including a Dean's Teaching Award for Excellence from the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Dr. Levin also accepted a Distinguished Service Award from the Northwestern University Medical School's department of medicine. Furthermore, he has been honored with a 2011 Tufts University School of Medicine Alumni Dean's Award and 1994 Distinguished Service Award from the Central Society for Clinical Research, among others. Dr. Levin was notably recognized among Chicago's Top Doctors by Chicago Magazine in 2001 and has been featured in the fourth and fifth editions of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare and the seventh edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering.

Dr. Levin earned an undergraduate degree at Harvard University in 1957 and a Doctor of Medicine, cum laude, at Tufts University School of Medicine in 1961. He then completed an internship in 1962 and a residency in internal medicine in 1964 at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, followed by a fellowship in nephrology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas in 1966. Dr. Levin is a diplomate of the American Board of Nephrology and is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
