Dr. Hewes began his career as a resident in radiology at Loma Linda University Health in California from 1978 to 1981 and president of the house staff association at Loma Linda University Health in 1980. After this appointment, he served as a fellow in orthopedic radiology at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City from 1981 to 1982 and fellow in interventional radiology at Johns Hopkins Hospital at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD, from 1982 to 1983. Dr. Hewes was further associated with Loma Linda University in California from 1983 to 1984 as an assistant professor of radiology.
Dr. Hewes has also worked for Wright State University in Dayton, OH, as an associate professor. From 1984 to 2002, he was a staff member at Kettering Medical Center in Ohio. During this time, he was active as vice chair of the department of radiology from 1985 to 1987 and chair of the department of Radiology from 1988 to 1995. Dr. Hewes contributed to Patient First as president from 1994 to 1995 and medical director from 1996 to 1998.
Following this opportunity, Dr. Hewes excelled as an interventional radiologist of the medical staff at Hilton Head Hospital on Hilton Head Island, SC, from 1999 to 2009. He maintained involvement with Hilton Head Hospital from 2007 to 2009 as medical director of the department of radiology and served as president of Radiology of Hilton Head, LLC from 2007 to 2009 as well. Dr. Hewes continued his career as medical director and department of imaging radiology consultant for the Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center & Healthcare Partners from 2009 to 2015 and was subsequently associated with the Radiology Specialists of Florida at the Florida Hospital Orlando.
Prior to embarking on his career, Dr. Hewes completed undergraduate coursework at Kettering College in Ohio in 1971 and the Washington Adventist University in Takoma Park, MD, in 1973. He earned his Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Medicine from Loma Linda University in 1976. Dr. Hewes is a diplomate of the American Board of Medical Examiners, the American Board of Radiology and the American Board of Vascular and Interventional Radiology.
In addition to his career, Dr. Hewes has been a contributor of articles to professional journals. He has made national and international presentations, including Prague, Warsaw, Moscow, Leningrad, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Singapore, and Paris. He held the position of president of the Spring Valley Academy Alumni Association from 1987 to 1989 and Kettering Radiologists, Inc., from 1987 to 1995 and again from 1997 to 1999. From 1998 to 1999, Dr. Hewes was active on the board of directors and as chair of the finance management committee for Spring Valley Academy.
Dr. Hewes excelled as a volunteer with the radiology education program in Micronesia from 1998 to 2008, and in the Marshall Islands from 2009 to 2010. He also served as the medical director for the Carolina Conference Seventh Day Adventist Church from 2006 to 2009. Dr. Hewes has been on the board of directors for Seventh Day Adventist Churches in Daytona Beach, FL; Kettering, OH; and on Hilton Head Island, SC.
Dr. Hewes is a member of the Volusia County Medical Society, the Society of Interventional Radiology, the Radiological Society of North America, the American Medical Association and the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He has belonged to the Miami Valley Radiological Society, where he served as president in 1994. Dr. Hewes was recipient of the Philip Wilson Award from the Hospital for Special Surgery in 1982 and the Certificate of Merit from the American Roentgen Ray Society in 1983.
In 1990, Dr. Hewes was presented with the Distinguished Alumnus Award by Kettering College. He was named Physician of the Year by the Hilton Head Regional Medical Center in 2006 and received the Mission Award from the Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center in 2012. Dr. Hewes has previously been selected for inclusion in the fourth edition of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America, the 27th edition of Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in the World.
