Dr. Herbert Weissbach holds six patents in his field.
BOYNTON BEACH, FL, December 04, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Herbert Weissbach, Ph.D., with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Weissbach celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Appointed as a distinguished research professor emeritus in the Center for Molecular Biology and Biotechnology at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) in 2017, Dr. Weissbach is a recognized biochemist and researcher who devoted more than 60 years to the sciences. After a long research career in government and in industry he began research at the University in 1997. His most recent research involved understanding the mechanisms that cells use to protect against oxidative damage, based on the observation that cells have a mechanism to protect against oxidative damage to methionine residues in proteins.
A career that stems back to 1953, Dr. Weissbach was first hired as a chemist with the National Heart Institute in Bethesda, MD. Entering a new joint graduate program between the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and George Washington University, he worked at the NIH for 15 years becoming the acting Chief of the Laboratory of Clinical Biochemistry between 1968 and 1969.
During his tenure, he also served as an independent investigator for the organization, where he continued his studies on the role of vitamin B12 in methionine biosynthesis and the emerging field of protein synthesis. Dr. Weissbach then served as the associate director and director at the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology (RIMB) in Nutley, NJ, between 1969 and 1996 and as a Vice President of Research at Hoffmann-La Roche in Nutley between 1983 and 1996. The RIMB was involved in the very early days of the emergence of the biotechnology industry and was instrumental in helping Hoffmann-La Roche enter this field. In fact, Dr. Weissbach described this period at Roche in a book that he co-authored with David Fisher in 2016 called "A Camelot of the Biomedical Sciences: The Story of the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology." When the RIMB closed, he began research at FAU, where he spent another two decades before retiring.
Dr. Weissbach was an adjunct professor at George Washington University, Columbia University, the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, and Princeton University. He served as an editor for Molecular Mechanisms of Protein Biosynthesis, the Journal of Biological Chemistry, the International Journal of Neuropharmacology and the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, and was an executive editor for Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics. He has authored more than 460 publications in various peer-reviewed journals and has been listed as one of 300 of the most cited authors in his field between 1961 and 1976.
Dr. Weissbach is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences, an elected charter fellow of the National Academy of Inventors and a member of the American Academy of Microbiology. Dr. Weissbach is also a longtime member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. A former treasurer for the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Dr. Weissbach served on the Biomedical Research Advisory Council for the state of Florida, on the board of directors of Savient Pharmaceuticals, and as chairman of the advisory committee for Research Centers in Minority Institutions of the City College of New York, among several other roles.
Dr. Weissbach holds six patents in his field. The recipient of multiple awards for his work, some of his more recent honors have included a 2010 Induction into the FAU Science Hall of Fame, a 1994 Distinguished Alumni Award from George Washington University, and a 1988 Townsend Harris Medal from the City College of New York Alumni Association. In his field, he received in 1970 the Enzyme Award by the American Chemical Society and a 1968 Superior Service Award by the U.S. Department of Health. Dr. Weissbach has been cited in every edition of Who's Who in America since 1987, as well as more than 20 editions of Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the South and South East and Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
Born in New York City in 1932, Dr. Weissbach later attended The Bronx High School of Science. He then earned a Bachelor of Science in chemistry at the City College of New York in 1953, followed by a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy at George Washington University in 1955 and 1957, respectively, where he did research on the biosynthesis and metabolism of serotonin. In 1958 he did postdoctoral studies at the University of California at Berkeley that resulted in the identification of the first coenzyme form of vitamin B12. He married his wife, Renee Kohl, the same year he completed his bachelor's degree, they share four children together.
In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Herbert Weissbach, Ph.D., has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
