Dr. Janos John Gertler is a professor emeritus of electrical engineering who taught at George Mason University (GMU) in Fairfax, VA, for 31 years.

Dr. Gertler is a professor emeritus of electrical engineering who taught at George Mason University (GMU) in Fairfax, VA, for 31 years. Retiring in 2016, he taught a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses, bringing his extensive expertise in control engineering and signal processing with him to the classroom. A former visiting professor and associate dean of engineering at New York Polytechnic University, Dr. Gertler is also a former assistant professor at Budapest University of Technology and Economics in Hungary and former associate visiting professor and visiting professor at Case Western Reserve University.

In the field, Dr. Gertler served as the deputy director at the Computing and Automation Research Institute with the Hungarian Academy of Sciences between 1971 and 1981. He also performed consultant work for Bailey Controls in Cleveland, OH, between 1983 and 1984 and for General Motors in Warren, MI, between 1989 and 1996. Devoting the latter portion of his career to concentrating on fault detection and diagnosis in engineering systems, Dr. Gertler is known for conducting research in the theory and application of model-based diagnosis techniques. He developed a generalized parity relation method on the basis of analytical models, and extended it to the framework of Principal Component Analysis (PCA). He also conducted a macro-model analysis of the effect of offshoring and rehiring on the U.S. economy. He worked with General Motors on the development of advanced, on-board diagnostics for automobile engines, among several other notable accomplishments.

Dr. Gertler has participated in numerous international conferences as a plenary speaker between 1974 and 2008, and his research has been documented in more than 160 publications as sole or lead author. His work has been cited more than 6000 times in the scientific literature. In 1998, he authored a book called "Fault Detection and Diagnosis." He was the editor-in-chief for the International Federation Automatic Control (IFAC) "Conference Proceedings Series" between 1984 and 1996 and for the IFAC journal "Annual Reviews in Control" between 1996 and 2015.

An elected fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the IFAC, Dr. Gertler formerly chaired the IFAC's computers, policy and publications committees and the IFAC-Elsevier publications managing board. He continues to serve as the organization's advisor for life since 1999. A very influential international organization, Dr. Gertler had the opportunity to meet and befriend many other professionals from around the world. He is also a longtime foreign member of the Hungarian National Academy of Sciences.

The recipient of an Outstanding Research Faculty Award from GMU in the School of Information Technology and Engineering in 2004, Dr. Gertler also received an Advisor for Life Top Service Award of IFAC and has been showcased in more than 30 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who in the World. He has held a Diploma with Distinction in electrical engineering from Budapest University of Technology and Economics in Hungary since 1959, followed by a Candidate in Science (Ph.D. equivalent) in 1967 and Doctor of Science in 1980 from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

Born in Vienna, Austria, Dr. Gertler was greatly influenced by his stepfather, an electrical engineer, to pursue an education in the sciences. Just one year after earning his highest degree, he left for the United States. Now enjoying his retirement as much as possible, Dr. Gertler is the proud father of one son and grandfather of two granddaughters. He has been married to his second wife, Eva Anna Vas, since 2000.
