Dr. Seymour Diamond is an internally recognized pioneer in headache medicine. His first publication on the subject appeared in 1964, and then he served a variety of offices, including President and Executive Director, of the American Association for the Study of Headache (now American Headache Society). In 1970 he founded the National Migraine Foundation (now National Headache Foundation) to educate and advocate for patients, their families, their caregivers, and the public about migraine and other headache diseases. The Diamond Headache Clinic, Chicago, which he founded in 1974, is the largest, private headache center in the U.S. The Diamond Inpatient Headache unit, now at Presence Saint Joseph Hospital, Chicago, is the oldest and largest comprehensive inpatient facility for those with headaches. In 1972, he introduced biofeedback therapy to his headache patients – the first to use it clinically.
Dr. Diamond is the Director Emeritus and Founder of the Diamond Headache Center in Chicago. Also, he serves as the Executive Chairman and Founder of the National Headache Foundation. He considers the relationships he built with patients over the years to be the highlight of his career.
Dr. Diamond has served in a number of academic positions. From 1985 through 2010, Dr. Diamond served as Adjunct Professor of Cellular and Molecular Biology at Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science. At the same institution, he served as Clinical Professor of Family Medicine from 1999 through 2010. From 2009 through 2010, he was a Lecturer in the Department of Neurology at Loyola University Chicago-Stritch School of Medicine.
Dr. Diamond was a student at Loyola University Chicago in pre-medical studies from 1943 to 1945. He earned a Bachelor of Medicine from Chicago Medical School in 1948, from where he was awarded a Doctor of Medicine in 1949. He completed internships at University of Arkansas Hospital, Little Rock, Arkansas, and White Cross Hospital, Columbus, Ohio. Dr. Diamond started in general practice in Chicago in 1950.
He has been the honoree of many special lectureships, including the Falconbridge Lecture Series at Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada in 1987. In 1982, he presented the National Migraine Foundation Lectureship, and was the first recipient of the Migraine Trust lectureship in 1988. At the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, he was the Distinguished Lecturer in Neurology in 1992. And, in 1994, he presented the inaugural Leonard Lovshin Lectureship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.
Dr. Diamond has served as an editor or co-editor for many professional publications and books. From 1990 through 2002, he was Editor-in-Chief of the journal, Headache Quarterly. From 2003 through 2008, he was Editor-in-Chief of Headache and Pain – Current Treatment and Research. Currently, he is Editor-in-Chief of Head Wise, a publication of the National Headache Foundation. Dr. Diamond served on the editorial board for Pediatric Drugs from 2001 through 2015, and was an editorial consultant for BIOSIS from 1986 to 1990. He has written or coauthored over 500 articles for professional journals, and continues to serve as a reviewer for peer-reviewed journals, including Neurology.
As an expert in the field, Dr. Diamond has co-authored numerous works, including "A Pain Specialist's Approach to the Headache Patient" in 1994, "The Hormone Headache" in 1995, "Diagnosing and Managing Headaches, Seventh Edition" in 2009, "The Practicing Physician's Approach to Headache, Fifth Edition" in 1992, and "More Than Two Aspirin: Help for your Headache Problem" in 1976. He also co-wrote "Advice from the Diamond Headache Clinic" in 1982, "Coping with Your Headaches" in 1982 with a second edition in 1987, and the "Headache in Contemporary Patient Management" series in 1983. Dr. Diamond also served as a co-author for "Headache and Diet" in 1990, "Sexual Aspects of Headaches" in 1992, and "Conquering Your Migraine" in 2001. He also co-wrote "Headache and your Child" in 2001, "Contemporary Diagnosis and Management of Headache and Migraine, Second Edition" in 2000, and "Headache through the Ages" in 2005.
Furthermore, Dr. Diamond was a contributing author to "Wolff's Headache and Other Head Pain, Sixth Edition" in 1993, "Handbook of Pain Management, Second Edition" in 1994, "Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs, Second Edition" in 1994, and "Current Review of Pain" in 1994. Aside from these, he contributed as an author to "New Advances in Headache Research" in 1994, "Conn's Current Therapy" in 1998, "Advanced Therapy of Headache" in 1999, and "Diamond and Dalessio's Practicing Physician's Approach to Headache, Sixth Edition" in 1999.
During his career, Dr. Diamond was appointed as a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine. He has been a member of the American Medical Association, the Illinois State Medical Society, the Chicago Medical Society, the Association of Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback, and the International Association for the Study of Pain. He served on the Board of Science and Policy Advisors with the American Council on Science and Health. During his active membership with the American Society of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, he founded and was chairman of the headache section from 1982 to 1989, and a member of the committee of coordination of science sections from 1983 to 1989. He served the Word Federation of Neurology as an Executive Officer from 1980 to 1995, and was a member of its research group on migraine and headaches.
He served the American Medical Association as a member of the development section of clinical pharmacology and therapeutics from 1987 to 1989, and was a member of the health policy agenda for the American people, a member of the cost effectiveness conference, and a member of the development reference committee "C" on education.
Dr. Diamond received a Presidential Recognition Award in 2005 for his work with the Association of Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback. At the National Headache Foundation, he was president from 1971 to 1977, executive director from 1977 to 1995, executive chairman since 1995, and the first recipient of certifications of added qualification in headache management by the National Board Certified in Headache Management in 2001. At the American Association for the Study of Headaches, Dr. Diamond was executive director from 1971 to 1985, president from 1972 to 1974, and No. 1 Regent Member in 1984, where he received the Service Award from 1971 to 1985 and the Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999. He was also involved with the Illinois Academy General Practice, where he was chairman of the mental health committee from 1966 to 1970, and the Postgraduate Medical Association, where he was president in 1981.
For all of these achievements, Dr. Diamond received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Chicago Medical School in 1977, the National Migraine Foundation Lectureship Award in 1982, the Award of Headache Consortium of New England in 1997, Certified Appreciation from the Chicago Medical Society in 1998 and the Presidential Award from the Alumni Association of the Chicago Medical School in 2002.
Now, in his 90's, Dr. Diamond continues writing and editing. In 2015 he served as Editor-in-Chief of the textbook, Headache and Migraine: Biology and Treatment. During that same year, he co-wrote, The Headache Godfather – The Story of Dr. Seymour Diamond and How He Revolutionized the Treatment of Headaches. This book recalls his personal and professional life. And, in 2017, he co-wrote, Headache Solutions at the Diamond Headache Clinic.
